Cruise Control

Post by Portagie1968 on 6/24/2011, 4:33 am

First topic message reminder :

Love cruise control. It makes the world go round. lol! The Ford stand on cruise control is not to use it when in tow haul mode. Most people I know do. The problem I have with it is the lag time before acceleration occurs when I am in tow haul. Has anybody experienced this problem and if so how did you fix it. If there is a fix.

Seriously though, I use cruise control all the time, rarely use tow/haul, and have never had a problem, whether it was my 2006 Ford or my new Dodge. Although, with cruise on, if you encounter a good uphill grade, the truck will keep the same speed, no matter what RPM it needs, which can be bad.

I also now use my Exhaust Brake all the time, towing or not.

You know, the good part of owning a FORD, you don't have to worry about cleaning the bugs off the front of the camper cause the Ford cant tow as fast as the bugs fly. lol!

Not an exhaust brake, more like a transmission brake.

Don't know a better way to explain it than the marketing cool-aid on the Banks site:

Banks SpeedBrake™

A revolutionary approach to exhaust braking, Banks' patented new SpeedBrake does what no brake has done before. The world's first all-electronic braking system, SpeedBrake achieves maximum braking power by intelligently modulating systems already found on the truck. SpeedBrake manipulates the variable geometry turbine vanes in concert with deliberate gear selection and torque converter clutch application to deliver not just total hill-taming stopping power but also peace of mind. Hands (and feet) free, and totally automatic, SpeedBrake lets you set your desired downhill speed and it does all the rest. A huge value-add designed to work in conjunction with any Banks power tuner and Banks iQ-interface combo.

The trany in a Ford has a brake in it already. So this would be in addition to it if I understand correctly.

No brake in the transmission.

Now if you are saying that the Tow / Haul mode uses transmission braking, then yes.

Thanks, I see. Thats how the late dodges exhaust brake works, through the variable geometry turbine vanes along with downshifting of the auto trans. The 6.7L engines that is but without the set point. My old 5.9L is old school with a pacbrake.

Go for it, you won't regret the speedbrake by the sounds of it. I know I love my exhaust brake. I use it all the time but not on ice or snow.

Ford has used the variable geometry turbo since the 6.0. That and the T/H mode program of the transmission has worked very good for me.

There is a saying among Jeepers - "Its a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand."

There needs to be one for Duramax/Allison owners - "Its an Allison, you wouldn't understand." Laughing

I think I'll put that in my signature. Cool
