Oldelmer1's fault.

Post by Maxtor on 6/14/2011, 4:19 am

First topic message reminder :

Ok,,, here it comes:

Tom "the cause of the problem" and I were talking on the phone, and since we both "had" 2006 Ford F350 TV's we talked about trading them in on new 2011 F350's. Well, we both found out that Ford would give us about 22k on a trade in for our 2006's on the new 2011's. The new trucks were priced at 44K, with all the discounts. So anytime I make a "because I want to" purchase, I always look at what else I could buy with the money. The difference in price was 22k. So Ford was telling us, that a new truck was worth two 2006 trucks. Both of us had low miles. We have 31,000 miles on ours. After thinking about what else I could buy with the 22k, I decided I would rather keep my truck and have a Vette, rather than just have a new truck. So you can see it is all Tom's fault.. lol! I really did not need the Vette,,, but what the heck... Life is short.
Now the story gets worse....
I tested the Vette against our 240ZV8 and the 240 was faster affraid
So it cost me another 11k to have a supercharger installed to make it faster than the 240.
All Toms fault... char124 [img][/img]

We ordered our 06 psd from the factory, with a 6 spd. manual trans. They are bulletproof, but in hind sight, I should have ordered the automatic.

I was told they are better when they a rebuilt the first time.
There is a guy in LA that rebuilds them with better parts clutches ETC. and from what I heard he is the guy to go to I just wish I could remember his website.

my small truck is a stick and I drive it all the time but when I first hurt my shoulder it was almost impossible to drive. Also my other truck TV was stick and boy does it get hard when traffic is heavy.

Sticks and sports cars go together like burgers and fries.

However, the newer paddle shifters are pretty neat.

I use to be able to drive a military twice and half with one. Legs work great. Shifted with my left hand.

My reasoning on ordering my TV with a stick was that:

1. More reliable.
2. Better mpg
3. More control going up and down mountains.
4. I did not want "transmission" problems.

The dealer did not have a stick for me to test, or probably would not have bought one, because the negatives are:

1. Slower than you know what off the line. I did not know this.
2. Not user friendly in traffic. I knew this up front, and do not live in the city.
3. Not user friendly taking off up hill from a stop. I also knew this.
4. DW does not want to drive it..." That might be a positive" Laughing

Number 5 on the pluses. Longevity. Engine will last longer with a standard. Put up with the last 4 if I had a standard. They can wait behind me.

Maxtor , have you learned how to skip gears yet ? That will speed you up some on the take offs but no matter , when your pulling a load its slow. Except down hill.
When I drove big trucks they had governors that held them at 60mph. When I was in the hills and mountains on the interstate, " Georgia OverDrive " kicked in, Neutral. You could hit 80MPH plus easy then.

No,,, I don't know how to skip gears. When pulling the WC, I take off in granny gear to keep the clutch in top condition. Then at about 5 mph, shift to first, then at 2000rpm shift through second, third, fourth all at 2000 rpm, except for fifth, because it would be at 70 mph at 2000 rpm. 60 mph is about 1750 rpm in fifth gear. I agree with Portagie, that the engine should last longer, and of course no problems with trans cooler, or overheating the trans. nor frequent trans fluid changes. But,,, it would be a killer to be stuck in big city stop and go traffic with a stick. Specially going up hill. You could burn up a clutch very fast. It was 105 here today, so we had lunch at the park by the river, and then stayed in the house with the a/c set a 76 degrees.

After 3 years of towing with the Allison...
I simply will not entertain the thoughts of buying any other for a tow truck. This is coming from a die hard standard tranny guy.

I know you Ford and Dodge guys get tired of hearing this but the Allison is one amazing transmission. With the manual mode (started in '06 I think) you get the best of both worlds.

The thoughts of the new GM trucks with the allison and an exhaust brake.... I must get those thoughts out of my head. Laughing

Not at all, for years the ideal truck would be a Ford with the Cummins engine and Allison transmission. In the last couple of years, both Ford and Dodge have made very good transmissions. I don't know if they are as good as an Allison.
