Blow out

Post by Admin on 6/11/2011, 9:16 am

sitting at wall mart in Valdosta ga with my first blow out with power kings.
It popped like a morta round so I was able to stop quick before it shredded the camper.
Walmart only has the marathons so looks like it will be 3 more goodyears soon.
The power kings did me well until today.

Glad you didn't have any camper damage. Our bad one popped like a morter round too, but we were driving too fast to avoid damage.

It was a 06'. I thought it was newer.
I gotta check the age on the other three to see what they say also.
The Goodyear today was 10'

I guess everyone is using the high pressure valve stems. I hear low pressure valve stems are the cause of most blow outs. My trailer came with low pressure stems and the tires had a maximum pressure of 70#. I believe the low pressure stems are good up to 60#, not real sure of that. Just a thought!

Have always used the hd metal stems.
Not sure if I ran over something in the road or the tire just blew apart. But my first guess was tire separated.

Re: Blow out

Post by CumminsWildcat on 6/12/2011, 3:57 pm

Had a blow out on I-85 in Charlotte, was going about 65mph when I heard what sounded like the air brakes bleeding off on those big rigs...but there wasn't one near me. Looked in my door mirror just in time to see the white wheel well trim go flying off. Pulled over as quickly as I could, safely. The back tire on the curb side had de-laminated, the tread just peeled off like a banana. Upon further inspection, I noticed one of the other tires starting to go also. Put the spare on and headed for the closest tire shop. Ended up buying two Carlisle tires, that's all they had. I want to upgrade to 16" wheels and LT tires. Any suggestions or advise?

The other year when I had tire problems I had new Metal Valve Stems installed all the way around.

Last year I had the tread seperate from one of the tires on mine. I noticed it right away and was able to get from the left lane in construction to the shoulder. The tire never went flat.....we were very lucky. Was looking to replace them the following month. I was told replace them every five years regardless of wear, well it was year five. Ironically, the one the decided to let go of the tread was my spare that I just rotated on because the other had a small cut in the side wall.

Isn't there a number or code on a given tire to tell you when it was manufactured or something like that? I'd like to know not only how long I've personally had the tire on the trailer, but also how old the tire itself is.

Thanks

Yes there is a date on all tires.

Re: Blow out

Post by Duke on 6/16/2011, 4:28 pm

That's a good link. I need to check my tire dates. I had a slow leak that couldn't be found so decided to use the spare. All the tires were DURO tires that came with the trailer and all markings on all five of the tires were exactly the same except for one, maximum tire inflation. The original four tires had 70# as maximum and the spare had 65# as maximum tire pressure. I have not looked at the manufacture dates but plan to do that soon. I am not real comfortable running that tire on my trailer with the other three. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks! Duke

We too had a blow out with a little damage on our Cat. Right after we got it.
I naturally have it loaded heavy, maybe a touch over. The tire dealer said I should have E rated tires. So I put 4 new tires on. E rated. They did change valve stems too. Made a huge difference. Towed much better and never had anymore blowouts.

After that last blowout that caused extensive damage to the trailer, we bought tire pressure sensors. Hopefully, we'll be warned before a tire blows again.

Darn Phillip.

Didn't you have a blowout last year as well with extensive damage?
Glad no damage this time.

I'm hoping to get this 2nd season out of our stock tires then I'm making the move to made in USA 16" LT's with an E rating.

Its a shame to have to worry about tires that are only a year and a half old.

The one I pulled off was a 06' model power king. The one I blew out last year was a sure nuff piece of crap off brand, like triangle or something name. It blew and the power king was all bulged out but still made it home.
I was passing through a really tight construction zone when this one blew out the other week , I'm still thinking I might have ran over something in the road.

I swear if they made a solid rubber tire i would by it.....this blowout crap is a crazy. I had one last year on a 2 year old trailer "power Kings"and when i inspected before the trip everything looked fine and i also had metal stems.

They make solid rubber tires for fork lifts and bob cats but man that would make for a ruff ride.
