New switch for bedroom light

Post by Portagie1968 on 6/8/2011, 5:28 am

Well I took the plunge and started the mod to add a light switch. The 29 and 30RLBS are not user friendly to this mod. I cut several holes exploring for the right way to do this, found out FR does not hook up wires as they should, and have made many mistakes but I am getting there. Going to post pictures of the on going mod and hope to be done by next week. First pictures look bad but the best is yet to come.

The 1st picture is were I did some looking for access. The hole in the ceiling has to be done to get the wires down the wall and to be able to reach to the door. Some kind of header there that when you pull the wires they get stuck on. The wire holes in the side braces are almost filled to capacity and you need a lot of luck to get the wires down. As you can see the wires run across the top plate so you can not drill new holes with out tearing up wires. Then I found out that I can cut the panel in the closet to save 2 holes on the outside wall. I use three 20 foot lengths of nylon string to pull the wires. Snake is useless. I am using 12 gauge house wire(Blue and green wire). Insulation seems thin but it should work. Recommend using 12 gauge car wire instead.

Removed speaker first to see if I could reach. Do not waste tour time

Tried to use 110 holes for new wire. Did not need to. Holes were of no use until I cut the hole in the closet and hand feed(almost forced) each wire down. Now I need to rewire the plug.

The holes in the wall and the cabinet are easy to fix. Cover them up one way or the other. The ceiling is a brain buster for me. Any suggestions. Much more to come.

Okay we are about done. Speaker is back in place, Ac wires have been joined, plug back with new box and cover, switch is in, some holes are covered, and three more holes to go. Now for the big clean up job.

Used a house box, square plug and cover so I would look like the rest of the trailer.

Now I have to clean up the wicked kitty and cover 3 holes. Crawford's will take care of one and I have some wood for the other 2.

Fr does not follow wiring code for 12 volts is what I found out.

If I made that kind of mod, and the DW saw it like your first pictures, I would ask that donations be made to any Shriners Children Hospital in my memory.

Wow, that's a lot of work. Nicely done, though.

We seldom use those overhead lights. We have a light switch for the bathroom right by the grab bar by the stairs. That gives us enough light to get to the light we have on the small counter - then we turn off the bathroom light.

This looks like a lot of work for a very small convenience. Glad it's turning out the way you want it. Nicely done.

Before I brought her in the trailer to give me some ideas I asked here to take some deep breaths, do not freak out, and it would all be fixed. deadhorse

thanks FR should have put that in to begin with. This way we do not need and extra light. We do not like to lean over the bed to turn on the light. Long stretch. Easier with a switch. In an emergency I got a switch arms length away that will light the whole bedroom. Easier to turn on then the small lights in that situation. U slap that sucked and it is on. Now easier to get into bed. DW crawls in and we all set. She can see a lot better with the big light then the small ones without her glasses. I reach over and bang it is dark and the fun begins. The night light in the bedroom helps but it is still bump and feel for my wife. Also the light in the BR is fluorescent. Great for dry camping. Many advantages for us and a lot of work. Almost done. Need to stain and paint some wood. Apply as need and it is over. Next running wires for the new pump switch.

One thing I have found out is if you want to change anything from factory specs it is a lot of work. Nature of the beast.

Still a lot of work. Scruffy says he would have done this, instead of tearing up the walls/ceiling:

It is over, the trailer is 90 percent clean, and some places are awaiting there final paint job tomorrow.
[img][/img]
[img][/img]

Covered this with a panel in case I have electrical problems in the future. Should have used light oak instead of golden oak. I have the tape but by the time we bury it with the stuff we permanently packed in the trailer you will never see it.
[img][/img]

Surprising how much better this looks in the trailer than the pictures. Mod with clean up should take less than 4 hours. Filling and painting about 2 hours.
So if U have a 30RLBS this shows U what U have to go thru to put a switch in for your bedroom light.
