Clear Door Panel

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 6/6/2011, 11:10 am

We put in this clear door panel. It's much nicer now that we can look out without the OEM gray panel obstructing the view. Some time ago Scruffy put a lever (purchased) in the gray panel that enabled us to open/close the door without sliding the panel. Scruffy hasn't tried that yet - he doesn't think it will work because the design of the panel is a little different. He'll have to take some measurements. I found 3 alternate ways to accomplish the same thing, though. That will be a later MOD.

The new panel was about 1/4 inch more in height than the old. To make the new one fit, Scruffy had to cut about 1/4 inch off. It fits fine now.

I replaced just the sliding part with the clear version. It actually makes a big difference. The original white one had sagged out of shape so bad it wouldn't stay in the grooves. The clear one seems much more rigid. Time will tell.
I definately recommend it.

On mine it came clear but they stuck what looks like a rubber floor protector for table legs for a knob and if you close you can not open it from outside I need to figure out something for that.

We did the same as Treekiller. I have the other piece, I just haven't figured out how to "glue" it in like the old one was. How did Scruffy do it?

The old panel is white? I guess ours has grayed a bit.

The old stationary panel came out easily. It wasn't glued in. On the bottom edge of this panel in the middle of the entire slide space is a little clip, or maybe two little clips (or just wire things) - Scruffy pulled them out with a needle nose pliers and the stationary panel came right out. There is a strip of foam attached to the old sliding part, you might need to remove it and put it on the new for a good seal - or get some thin weatherstripping. We used the old, and if you look closely, you can see a little tear near the bottom.

He tried to get the new stationary panel in and it was too big. He compared it with the old, and it was about 1/4 inch too big. He said he was going to cut it off with a box knife. I don't know if that worked or if he had to use a saw. He didn't glue it, and I don't know if he put in the little wire clips - it seems to be pretty tight. I think he said he would have to drill a couple little holes in the frame for the clips to fit into. I don't remember him drilling holes. It bent just enough to get it in, then he shoved it into the groove on the edge.

I bought mine on Amazon. Camping World has them but make sure you know the width of your door. The ones at Camping World were 2" too short for the door on our Cameo.

Amazon.com for us, also. Their prices are reasonable, and for many items they don't charge for shipping (if you spend more than $25 - we combined the clear panels with something else to get our $25).

For those ordering online or purchasing at a store, make sure you know the size of your current opening. There are quite a number of different sizes available. I think ours is the 12". Bought it at the Camping World Store up here in MI.
Also, I've seen the clear ones with the rubber bumper handles and I believe they are supposed to be on both sides.

I just had to send my unit back to the factory to have 3 fiberglass sides replaced to get my clear slider unit in the door. It came back with a whole new door assembly and the clear slide was the new feature. Laughing rap
