Another What Is It?

Post by BobnPi on 6/1/2011, 1:01 pm

I have absolutely no idea what this is or what it's used for. I know it's very old, but that's about it.

Looks like a clamp used to hold pipe on a set of utility bed racks

This ring between the two parallel pieces is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The two parallel pieces are connected to it and do not spread apart. The long handle can only move the parallel pieces about 3/8 inch as they pivot on the rivets.

The chain has two extra links in different areas. As I look at it now, it appears the chain could have wrapped around something and the flat metal piece on the end of the chain could have gone through the extra links to hold the entire apparatus in suspension.

I am really baffled by this thing.

Might be used for lifting sucker rod from water well for the old hand pumps.

I found out today what it its. It was used to weigh cotton sacks back when it was all picked by hand. You hung the weights under the circular piece, hung the entire apparatus by the chain from a tree limb or whatever, and on the long handle there is a place where near the end where it narrows a bit. That is where the cotton sack hung. Then you would add brass weights until it balanced.

My sister-in-law came by today and immediately recognized it. I used to have the full weight set, but sold the brass years ago. Wish I'd have known it was part of a set.

Agree, onetonford.... still think it is some sort of puller, not a weighing device....
