MY RAINY DAY MOD!!!

Post by bsmall2800 on 5/28/2011, 1:04 pm

I kneeled on the couch a few months ago and my knee bottomed out the cushion and broke a couple of those plastic strapping bands the couch manufacture used. Really is a very bad design. I replaced the broken straps with those nylon straps that you can buy just about anywhere. I figure I will be replacing all of the plastic straps with the nylon ones. I also added more cushion to the couch by sliding the cushion between the straps and the bottom of the original cushions that was much too thin to begin with. The cushion I added was the original cushions from the dinette. I plan on going on a trip in a couple of weeks and if there is too much cushion if that’s even possible I will cut an inch off. So after figuring out just how they put this together, now I know why it was very uncomfortable in the first place. Here are some of before and after pictures :

You can see it definitely added to the height of the cushions where you sit...

Good Job! wavesmilys

On mine I put the 1/8" tile board doubled up 54 X 30 and when we use as a bed I hinged it and you open it and take 4" memory from the upstairs bed and put on it. Much better than the air matress. and when we don't use the bed it goes on the bed and we sleep on it.

Bill,
That's stroke of genius to use the cusion from the dinette! Looks like a good fit. That absolutely has to make the sofa more comfortable.

Tater, it does make it a lot more comfortable..

I just had a brilliant idea with the issue of too much foam. If I were to just remove the old plastic straps, and replace them with the nylon adjustable straps. You know where I am headed with this idea????
Then adjust the nylon strap to have a little give which will let both layers of foam to sink a little further within the couch while in use.... Those white straps are very tight now with the extra foam. Actually when I slid the foam in place I thought that these straps weren't going to last too long with that kind of tension.. So I will test it on our next outing in a couple of weeks and see I am going to replace all the straps..

Sounds like a good idea. With the buckles on the black straps they are as adjustable as you wish.

You gave us an idea. Scruffy and I were sitting on the back porch. We have a swing that has a tight piece of fabric holding the cushions. We're thinking that fabric is going to rot after awhile, and were wondering how hard it would be to replace it - definitely hard to get it at the right tension. Then we thought of your mod. We can put the black straps on it - even criss-crossing them like the old webbed lawn chairs. So ----- thanks for a great idea.
