Not open.

Post by Tracker16 on 5/24/2011, 2:50 pm

For anyone heading out to Rocky Mountain National Park....Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will not open for the Memorial Day Weekend. The amount of winter snowpack that faced park snowplow operators when plowing began, combined with recent storms, have hampered park snowplowing efforts.
Take a look Here It's amazing. affraid

I fear for those who reside along the Big Thompson when all that snow starts melting in earnest!!

Impressive. Any idea what is normal for this time of year there?

This is above normal, but not totally out of line. Winter stays a long time at those elevations anyway, but some winters hang on longer than others. Just north across the border in Keystone, Wyoming (hour west of Laramie) and surrounding Medicine Bow area has received 352" for the season, which is about 3 1/2 feet above "normal".

Well at least the reservoirs downstream will be able to gain some ground. I just hope that it's a gradual melt and not too much of an impact on the feeder rivers and streams.

Jim,

We did have a tough winter, but then our NH winters are usually consistently tough ones year in and year out. Our snow fall average is 60" per year (JAN to DEC) in southern NH and a bit more up in the great north woods.

You're right though ..... YIKES!!! is the word.

I live just in east of the foot hills to the Rockies and I didn't have to shovel snow 1 time this year! The mountains get pounded and 60 miles (as the crow flies) away we get a dusting up to 3" - 4" and its melted by the next day....
You NEVER know what your going to get in Colorado!

But to keep the "weirdos" from moving here, we get 100 feet of snow every year and we lose power and for water months on end........ Wink
