Thermostat Help Part Duce

Post by Portagie1968 on 5/6/2011, 1:34 pm

Today I installed a Honeywell RTH111. I do not like the telephone cable they use, it is the pits to work with. It appears that I have to turn the Thermo down lower than the old one to get the trailer as cool but it works a lot better then that old piece of ????. I did not like the toggle switch in the side of the Thermo so I did it my way. It snaps into the wall and if I have to get it out that way be a different story. There is a way but it will not be fun. The pictures are below.

Used 20 gauge wire and a toggle switch for the Hi Fan.
[img][/img]

Cutting the hole in the wall I used a utility knife and a very special tool out of the knife drawer for the areas requiring a more delicate touch in the final touch up I needed to do.
[img][/img]

The hole the toggle switch will snap into.

How I wired mine. The large green wire to the left is the high fan wire.
[/img][img][/img]

The finished product.

Time for some medicine. Shooters

Thats exactly what I was trying to figure out how to do, but didn't want to cut a hole in the wall. I've looked through a bizillion switches trying to not do the toggle through the top thing.
But that looks good enough port that I may just pop a whole.
Now where did you get the switch ? kinda looks like one I saw at RAdio shack.
I've been trying to find one that looks similar that would mount on the wall without cutting a hole. Seen any like that ?

NAPA part number is right below switch. Do not worry about numbers I have written above part number. Measure the switch. Also u need to use the very special tool I used out of the silverware drawer to help with the hole. I have not seen any to mount above the wall with out a hole. That just would not look right to me.

Greetings Admin. One of the button pushers on me are the people who do mods and do not give U all the info. Part numbers, store purchased at and so and so on. So I live buy what I preach. It is all there. Everything anybody needs if they so desire to get frogy and do the mod. I even included my special tool. Not looking for kudos just telling it like it is.

The analog thermo must be way off. I set it on 78 and the trailer gets very cool. This new electronic one we set it at 74 and thank goodness for the thermo cool timer. These trailers do not stay cool very long. So far so good.

You'll probably notice that with a digital thermostat, your AC is going to work harder to maintain that temp setting; mainly due to how poorly insulated these 5th wheels are.

Our digital thermostat has a variable setting to regulate how far the inside temp change can go before it kicks on the AC again. I think we tried setting it for a 3 degree variance so the AC wouldn't have to work so hard on a really hot day. So if the temp is set for 72 degrees, it can actually climb to 75 before the AC cycles on again. A 1 degree variance was keeping the AC running all the time without a break.

Thank you TC. Mine is on a 5 minute internal timer now but I my either have to change thermo or go find out if there is a way to adjust. Info that comes with is not very helpful at all so. 3 degrees is the only way to go. Again thank you kind sir.

A quick google search on your particular thermostat revealed that it isn't programmable.

All Honeywell thermos do not change. Got email from them.

All of our current thermostats have a 1 degree differential that is non-adjustable. The system will cycle (heat or cool) anytime there is a 1 degree change in temperature. I apologize for the inconvenience.

So if i set it for 75 it turns off at 74 and on again at 76. So that is close to a 3 degree. If we do not like it research later. Like I said it has a 5 minute timer so as long as that works we are fine. That will be nice for the heater.

TC - I wonder how the heater will be effected with a possible 2 degree diff?

Re: Thermostat Help Part Duce

Post by TC on 5/14/2011, 4:07 pm

Because of the poor R value of most RVs, the inside temp will immediately start climbing or falling as soon as the ac or furnace shuts off. The smaller the thermostat's temp variance, the faster the ac or furnace will cycle back on as the inside temp quickly changes to equal the outside temp. In other words, if it only takes the inside temp two minutes to drop from 72 to 70, that's how long your furnace will stay off before the thermostat setting kicks the furnace back on again to bring it back up to 72.

Another observation worth noting, the floor vent at the top of the stairs as well as the heat from an operating LCD TV will directly influence the thermostat that is mounted next to the entertainment center (most of them are). The thermostat might think it's 72 in the Cat because it's getting direct heat from both sources even though the actual temp might be significantly less than 72, and will cycle differently than if the thermostat were mounted in a different spot away from the heat sources. Since we found it impractical to change the thermostat location, we dealt with this problem by putting a magnetic vent cover over that particular vent and adding a fan behind the TV to dissipate the heat. We noticed a significant change in the accuracy of our thermostat right away.

TC - Have read a lot and have found now the best thermo is a Hunter. Has the same settings you have. ( 1 - 2 - 3) SO now I wait for winter. If the heater is worked to much a new Thermo will be installed. Cheaper than repairing the heater.

Well we have been there and done that. Have now gotten to run both AC and Heater on my new thermo. In AC mode, we noticed that the thermo did not run according to the written word. If U set the thermo on 75 the AC goes off about 73 (chilly) and goes on again (compressor protector) about 78. The 78 is okay but the 73 can be invigorating. Now that I have found out the Thermo can work I may leave it. The only big dif I can see is that the AC could possibly go on at 77 with the Hunter. This might be a plus in our hot weather.
