Melted Outdoor Speaker

Post by NorCalCat on 4/30/2011, 1:26 pm

My used WC has one outside speaker that is melted on the bottom. This speaker is about 12" above the furnace exhaust. Anyone encounter this, and even better, were you able to resolve it? Question

If it can melt the speaker 12" away, what about the sidewall itself? Mine blows the hot air straight out. The sidewall doesn't get hot either. Is the furnance operating correctly? Is the vent installed correctly? Some punk take a lighter to it?

The forum backround pic of the trailer with the mountain/rock formation has a plastic refer vent less than 12" from it.

The speaker is above the vent, so I suppose it's logical that the hot air is rising and could cause damage, but the fiberglass is fine. Got me scratching my head Furnace seems to be operating fine. Will get some pics when the sun comes up.

NorCalCat, I have to agree with Earl I checked my vent while the heater was on and it blows straight out, with very little hot air rising close to the side of the trailer....

Something wierd is going on there. Look at the photo on the top of the forum now. Their plastic fridge access cover is probably only about four inches from the furnace vent without issues. Maybe somebody leaned something up against your trailer not knowing about the furnace vent behind it directing the heat to your speaker. Just a thought.

I think I like maxum's theory the best, it seems to fit. Just for grins, here are pics of the speaker location and of the melted speaker.

My bad on this one, I thought we were talking about the heater not the hot water tank. I have seen this happen on occasion to someone’s side of the trailer, but usually what I've seen are black marks they rise up from the hot water outside door on the side of the trailer.
As far as the hot water heater venting hot air mine does allow the hot exhaust to warm the outside of the trailer just above the vent/door. However not enough to cause any damage to the side

I think that it is just soot that was cleaned off. The water heater looks OEM.

I think something else melted the speaker cover.

The brown decal would be bubbled up if it got that hot I think. The little plastic latch on the grill would have been the first thing to melt. And it still looks in good shape.
That kinda looks more like a Kid with a Grill butane lighter might have been playing around there. Or maybe something really hot touched it but not something from the HW tank.

I would have to agree with Admin on this one I feel sure there would have been more damage to the side of the Cat. you could always use a thermometer at the speaker and light the water heater and see what the temp is

To me it looks almost like a chemical reaction than a heat meltdown if it was melted with heat you would think the speaker membrane would of burned thru it is thin but it looks intact.

Birds or rodents trying to get in? Well, no - it does look melted.

Intense sunlight hitting in that one spot? As the sunlight focused through a magnifying glass? Maybe sunlight reflecting off a mirror in a storage facility?

It IS strange, whatever caused it.

On my 24RL, the speaker is also above the HWH, but it is a lot closer than on NorCalCat's trailer. My speaker is no more than 4" above the HWH, and it's just fine. Something else going on here...

This mystery ranks right up there with what happened to the dinosaurs and Atlantis! The speaker was like this when I bought the trailer used from a dealership, and there was no history on it. I appreciate everyone's input, and hope to solve it. Thank you all for your posts. "You keep writin' 'em and I'll keep reading 'em!"

Thanks Specktout

Totally didn't see that one coming just as I was sipping on my Pepsi. But my nostrils are clean now.
Now that you mention it, That brings a flash back of the memorex guy in the lounge chair sitting in front of the speaker with everything blowing in the wind from the speaker.

Norcal,,, Its time to Mod the speaker covers,,,, I'm thinking some custom made stainless steel with custom engraving around the edges, maybe some cool scrolling stuff.

Check these covers out,,,,, I'm serious,,,, http://www.ronsbillet.com/category-s/26.htm

Those are cool, but ouch! I can drink a lot of Coors Light for the cost of those! But I do admit, they look great.

That price tag took my breath to. I think some plan ones will work just fine.
