Furnace popping/backfiring...

Furnace popping/backfiring...
I turned the furnace on for the first time this year. Fired off normally after purging air. But as it started heating up, it started popping, or backfiring. Seems to coincide with the furnace reigniting at the beginning of another cycle. Have been running it a couple of hours now, and the frequency has decreased, but not gone all together. Any ideas?

Mud Dobber nest? I had similar issue, I figure the popping was the nest burning. I also had fire shooting out the exhaust vent. Only saw it at night, during the day it was not visible. I used a long bar to break it up and get it all out. Fixed the problem.

Re: Furnace popping/backfiring...
Talked to the dealership today and was told the popping or backfiring is typically an improper mix of air and propane due to a partial obstruction. So, either I have mud dobbers as suggested earlier and just not aware of it, or I have a mouse nest or a dead mouse in there. Come to find out, mice like to get in thru the exhaust ports and nest. I didn't know that, and I don't see how they can get in there. It's a vertical climb with nothing for them to hold on to on the way up or down.
So, I need to take the furnace out and give it a good clean. Hope that fixes it.

TC, I have seen several mods for a screen over the vent. I have never needed it so have not done it. Probably wait to have a problem, but once mice find their way, others will follow it seems.

When the heater is running the fan howls when it wants to. Never know when it will do it. Sounds like the car fan when the shroud hits it. Anybody have any ideas. Can I get to the fan from the inside of the trailer?

You just need to keep the WC on the move so bugs and mice don't have a chance to make nests in your furnace.

How does the heat affect the screen? I'd be wooried about it melting. Just my thought.

I have run the heater and checked outside not enough heat to even discolor it also it is Stainless Steel and it is mounted 1/4 away from the outlet.

Sorry it looked like the fiberglass window screen. Stainless bug screen would work good. You could even mount it on the inside of the cover. I like your idea.
