Emergency slideout hydraulic cable patch?

Post by love4God on 4/20/2011, 9:18 am

I'm bringing my rv in for service and I'm leaving tomorrow morning. I'm prepping for my drive (first time it's out for the winter) and it appears a critter chewed through my hydraulic cable for my slide out.

Is there any way to repair that for 3-4 slides. Out to unload all my junk, in to drive it and then 1 overnight stop on the way? Would duct tape stand up to that pressure? I'm guessing it may not. Once I get there I'm sure they can help me out getting it repaired.

First..Welcome to the group!. Glad you're here.

Unfortunately, the only fix is to replace the line. If your lucky you may have a shop nearby that specializes in hydraulic hoses. They may be able to help you out.

I second Avid on the hose replacement. Did they chew all the way through it or just to the wire mesh? Assuming that Wildcat uses the standard hydraulic hose with wire mesh inside, you should be okay for a few uses with the mesh showing unless there is fluid leaking out. My dozer ( a family heirloom ) had the hoses chewed by beavers back in 1955 and I am still using it with no problems.

This is just my 2 cents and take it for what it's worth.

LOTS of fluid. They chewed right through. I guess I'll have to sleep up in the kids bunk, no slide out, until I get it fixed. Thanks

Some NAPA's can fix or build Hyd. lines. If you take yours in they can put a splice where the damage is.

In an absolute emergency, you can pick up an in line hose barb the size of your hydraulic hose. (brass male fitting on both ends used to connect / repair a hose)
Cut your hydraulic hose clean through and put 2 hose clamps on each side (4 total). Should work in a pinch.
Used this on a Jeep with hydraulic steer to get it out of the woods!

If you can get the hose off theres got to be a industrial supply place close by that could make the hose up for you copying the old one. Doesn't take long to do. Going to get the hose made would take longer than getting it off and on.

You seriously have 1955 hyd hoses still on the tractor ? Thats cool but dangerous. Especially if one blows thats aimed at your eyeball..... Flamer

I agree, the pressure alone is dangerous not to mention burn you if you been working it hard and the hydro fluid is good and hot. I seen lift truck guys soaked and burnt from hoses on the mask blowing, its not pretty or fun.

I ended up leaving it closed. I dropped off my wildcat for something else and they're going to fix the hose. I just left the stuff I had in the back room I couldn't get into.
