Wet Bolt Kit Upgrade/Mod

Post by Mopar_Earl on 4/17/2011, 10:55 am

While I had my trailer @ Trailair Service Center to get Level-up installed, I had them raise my trailer and install a wet bolt kit. I'm glad I did as the OEM plastic bushings were already shot with only 4375 miles on them. I included pics of the bad bushings.

If you haven't done it yet, you really need to install a wet bolt kit! These OEM plastic bushings could ruin your trip.

My gosh! Those look terrible. Something for Scruffy to check on. Thanks for the heads-up.

When my son & I did ours we found 2 cracked\broken bushhings. Our trailer is brand new. No wonder you hear trailers squeeking & creeking going through campgrounds. Gary

I switched to wet bolts when I had to replace a broken shackle. The factory ones were maybe 1/8 inch. The new ones are at least 1/4 inch and the kit came with brass bushings instead of the factory nylon ones. Wonderful upgrade, highly recommended. And the cost factor, if you can do it youself, is little. Did mine in one afternoon with no sweat.

Tom,
No, it was caught in time before it started to wear on the bolts, springs and shackle links. Couple of the bolts had some shinny spots where it was starting to wear metal to metal. I knew the OEM plastic bushings wouldn't last long but I never thought they'd wear that fast in such little time and milage.

Earl, Earl, Earl, your'e costing me a bunch of money lol!

All kidding aside yourock , I did that wet bolt hangers on my last pull trailer due to the hangers wearing out....
I wish that FR would just do it from the beginning, sure would make life a little easier.
I will keep an eye on the cats hangers and when its time I'll do the mod.

with the wet-bolts as well: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2722514490056654887buHEED

OK, I was clueless on a "wet bolt" until I looked at Shooters pics.

Just another name for a "greasable shackle" in four-wheeling terms.....

I had to ask 2. Now, with wet bolts, I have the wallowing whale and not the creaky crackly rambling wreck.

If a person wanted to do this himself, where would one buy these wet bolts and is there a specific size for the cats ??

I'll bet any good RV shop would be able to supply the bolts and inserts.... Let us know what you find..

Any good auto supply... cheaper than a RV dealer. Wet bolt systems are a standard item available through most suspension parts distributors. I got mine here in Canada from a parts dealer that would be equivalent to Napa or Pep Boys in the US. And as I said they were cheaper because they didn't have that RV statis attached.. I paid $235 for the entire kit where I am and it was $375 from the local RV guy. All you need is the dimensions from your existing suspension and your dealer can match it up in the book with several variations. It took about 5 minutes, had them the next day and installed them in about 3.5 hours and a couple of brews the next.

12 ton jack to raise the rig.. a couple of heavy jack stands... electric impact gun and a floor jack to support the suspension..

And I've read that you put the brass bushings in the freezer, they fit into the springs easier when they shrink.

I did not put the Exflex on. I was told by Dexter I did not need it since I have shocks on my trailer.

I put wet bolts on my TT last year but when I tried to shoot grease in them, 3 of them just wouldn't take any. Any ideas?
Maybe next week I'll take the weight off the wheels and see if I can get any in them.
