Re: duallys and cdl requirements
Here is What your Ohio CDL manual says.
You must have a CDL to operate:
• Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight
rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
• A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000
pounds if the gross combination weight rating
(GCWR) is 26,001 pounds or more.
• A vehicle designed to transport 16 or more
passengers (including the driver).
• Any size vehicle that is used in the
transportation of any material that requires
hazardous materials placards or any quantity of
a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42
CFR 73.
And here is the link to the manual.Hope it helps.

Re: duallys and cdl requirements
Your pick up pulling camper should be exempt from cdl, I know you don't have to stop at dot checks with an RV. I could be wrong but I don't think so. If it is a commercial vehical yes you would have to have a cdl, but personal rv, No

Re: duallys and cdl requirements
You should check with you DMV as Earl has posted. you may not need a commercial license but you may need a non-commercial depending on the weight of your cat and gross combination total weight.
Example my truck and cat loaded (No Water) weigh 19160 lbs my truck weighs 8160 lbs (F250) so while I have a CDL, I really would not need any special license in PA, But PA does have a requirement for a non-commercial license if the towed vehicle is over 10,000 lbs and the gross combination is over 26001 lbs.

Re: duallys and cdl requirements
We in Maryland are suppose to have a non commercial license if your GVWR is over 26001 pounds.
My truck's GVWR is 12,200, my camper is 13,965. So I am 164 pounds over.
I talked to a policeman and he said they don't really know what the license weights are(especially of you are out of state), and probably wouldn't even check if something happened. But he said, piss me off, and I will look for anything.
Do I have one, uuuuuummmmm, no...... Will I get one, probably, someday....
Of couse, of diesel keeps going up, I might not need one.

Re: duallys and cdl requirements
California requires an Endorsement attached to your class "C" license which requires you to take a "non-commercial Class A" exam..no biggie.... back of license has this statement:
"41. May tow Fifth wheel recreational trailer between 10,001 and 15,000 pounds GVWR"
I have to say, when I moved back from Nevada (which has the same rule), it is the first time I ever became "legal" after 40 odd years of pulling... Never been stopped or checked in all those years either. I bet I could pull a boat or small trailer behind this RV, and being a "triple" and would never be stopped.......but since I dont have a class "A" Commercial (CDL) not going to attempt it either.

John - You are about the second person in 6 years that has the endorsement. I never have gotten it.

Me and the Mrs. got one. Depending on the CA DMV office you go to, the clerk might have no idea what you are talking about. Mine had to call the supervisor. She knew all about it and pointed the guy to the cheat sheet on the counter.

If you are licensed to legally drive your rig in your home state, you are legal in all other states regardless of their regulations.

Mark - Great for mountains , not good in town. Ford does offer 3.73 for dully only.

Mark,
What kind of test did you have to do?

The written portion of the non-commercial class A license exam (as I understand it).

Are you talking mileage? Then yes, the 3.73 gets better mileage. However, having 4.10 gears towing on the flat is no problem, I set the cruise for 58 while towing and on the flat can get 10.5 - 11.0 MPG towing the 10k Wildcat with a 9k tow rig (total combined weight 19k). I'll take the 0.5 to 1.0 MPG hit towing whenever I see a mountain and living in the extreme bottom left of the country, there's nothing but mountains on the way out!
For 2011, there are only two rear-end choices on a long-bed dually 4x4, 3.73 and a 3.73 limited slip. However, there is so much torque in the 6.7 that mountains should be no problem for that combo.

Yep, two different 3.73 choices, one with and one without a limited slip differential.
