Satellite tv question for the experts.

Post by Replay13 on 3/24/2011, 6:03 pm

Hi Everyone,

And thanks for all replies. I have a newer Direct TV Satellite system at home. I am going to get set up with a extra dish to take with me camping using one of my home receivers. My home receivers are both model HR23-700. This is connected to a Direct TV slim line dish, and the LNB's have the SWM (single wire multi-switching) technology with the 3 LNB's. Probably a typical setup anymore with HD tv receiver/dvr. And with that setup it requires a Power Inserter that plugs in inside the house and is in-line with the cable between the receiver and the LNB's.

I believe that the 3 LNB's is for 3 different sattelites.... one for regular programing, one for HDTV, and one for HD local channels. I have a older round dish that has one LNB and till I can get more funds to update to the newer dish I would like to try the older one if it is compatible.

First question. Is anyone running the newer Direct TV recievers with a portable dish with one LNB? That would just aim at the satellite with the regular programing. The back of my reciever has a satellite 1 connection for SWM, and satellite 2 connection. I have no idea if the newer receivers are compatable with the older dishes and LNB's.

Second question. I think that with this setup the receiver can power the regular single LNB without the extra Power Inserter connected in-line, is this correct?

Third question. My old dish with the one LNB is one that I had from Dish Network. Does anyone know if this will work with Direct TV?

Ok.... I know I can just try it! LOL, and thats what I probably will do, unless someone thinks that I might damage my receiver.

Thanks for any and all help,
James

You were NOT kidding when you put "expert" in this post. I fear I don't even deserve to be reading it.

Good luck and I hope someone here can help you.

LNB, low noise block,
Recieves the low microwaves from the sat in the ski, amp's it to the right freq that goes to your TV.

I'm pretty sure the Dish lnb will not work with the newer Direct reciever. Thats why I have 3 Sat dishes on my house now. Just swapped over to Direct and have 3 HD and dvr hook up.
You could find somebody that just moved and go snatch their newer Direct dish off the house or pole and it will have the lnb you need. Theres gotta be about a half a billion of them sitting around not being used. Another option, go get a really nice portable over the air antenna that you could mount on the rear ladder and watch all the local HD channels for Free.
I think Oldelmer and a few others on here use their home sats so they should set you in the right direction.

Just did all this. I may have some answers for you.
No Dish network will not work with Direct TV.
We have a carry out dish. Works great for Direct TV. It auto switches direction for whichever satellite is requested.
I put an HD receiver in the camper. It is new as we just got Direct TV 2 months ago.
In the menu, I had to change the SWM and dish size-model.
It gives you all this in the menu. Go to parent controls - set up. Then to system set up.
Ours had to be set to multiswitch and an oval dish setting. It works perfect. I would not even waste my time with an old dish with new 3 LMB direct tv. For probably $50-$75 you should be able to get a new dish. I paid $50.00 for an additional dish at our local dish network store 1 year ago. My brother has a cottage and is tring to hook up his direct TV to a used dish. He too is having problems.
After I learned how the menu works on Direct, it seems easier to set up than Dish Network which was not a great match for the carry out.
Hope this helps a little

Hello again,

If anyone is curious the answer is "yes" it will work.

If your interested in the long answer I'll list the details. My receiver is a Direct Tv HR23, a newer swm (single wire multiswitch) dvr (digital video recorder). The dish is a older single lnb (low noise block converter) dishnet dish. With the single lnb it will only look at one satellite so it was aimed at Direct Tv's 101 satellite. The satellite at 101 degs has all the main Direct Tv sd (standard defination) programing. That means I could get all the Direct tv channels except no local channels and no hd (high definition) channels. I didn't count the channels but it was probably over 200 channels. Direct Tv has other satellites for that programing. Also some locations can get their local spot beamed programing on the 101 satellite, but I wasn't that lucky.

To make it work with the newer receiver after hooking everything up and powering up the receiver, I went into system setup/satellite and set it for 18" round dish, multiswitching, and single lnb (I only ran one cable). Then go the signal strength meters and aim the satellite, then continue on with the dish setup, ect.

The receiver is Direct Tv, and the satellite dish was Dishnet..... I wouldn't try this with a multiple lnb dish (one that looks at more then one satellite) I don't they would all align with two different networks and different satellite locations.

I guess all this rain made me bored. lol... I'm ready to go camping in my new Wildcat 27 rls!
