Check Engine Light On Ford

Post by Portagie1968 on Tue Mar 22, 2011 1:05 pm

I have a 2004 Super Duty F350. Here is the story and I am sticking to it. In 2009 my check engine light came on. Dealer reset and code was turbo but no problem. Stuck for a second was all he could say. Later in the year same thing. Turbo code but no problem. Begining of 2010 turbo code again but no problem. Oct 2010 egr valve code but no problem. Then the change started. Oct 2010 Engine light came on again but no code. Mar of 2011 check engine light comes on twice but no code and no problem. The first time it came on I reset it and the second time it turned itself off. This only happens when I am towing. What I mean by no problem is the truck runs the same. It still runs like a scarred rabbit when I push it. No leaks and no over heats. Mileage about 12 to 14. I am at a loss. Sending out distress blogs everywhere. I have a BD cool done timer and monitor installed. No chips, scanners, boasters of any sort. Any help would br appreciated. Question

If your engine has a mass air flow sensor, from experience on gas engines, it could be dirty. A $6.00 can of cleaner is a quick cheap fix. I have a 6.0 GM gas engine and what you describe is the problem I was having. Don't know about diesel engines. Just a thought.

Remove the light blub and chalk it up to being a 6L Ford diesel.... Just messin!

I find it odd that when the light comes on, you can get no code? That doesn't sound right. Are you sure the codes are being read with a reader that is compatible?

Yes because we are using the same reader. The first one was done at Ford. The rest ahve been read by my reader.

I'd make sure your scanner can read Ford's special codes. Some readers can't do it.

If the light comes on there should be a hard code.

Diesels do not have to be OBD11 compliant, so a standard code reader may not show anything. If the dealer has a diesel tech I would hope they know this.

My sister is the service manager at our local ford dealer, she said to have the codes read for the transmission the next time it happens and see if any are for 3rd or 4th gear slippage. it could be a bad sensor in the tranny, or believe it or not, a bad cam sensor.

Have seen that comment in other blogs for other problems. Just remove the light bulb and drive on.

Now that you mentioned it I did feel something under my butt when the trany shifted. Normally it is smooth but this time is was kind of a crunch. Best way I can explain it. Ford dealer next stop when I get home. I hope I did not clear the codes when I reset the engine light. Thank you.

Love it. 97% of Chevy's are still on the road today and 3% have made it home. The other 97% usually get towed home by Fords. Ford Ford
