How to repair torn slide out fabric?

Post by yoopdog on Mon Mar 21, 2011 1:14 pm

The slippery fabric on the underside of my 27BHWB hydraulic slide is torn. The tear keeps getting a bit worse every time I use the slide. Is there a recommended tape or other means to repair it?

Welcome to the forum. Are you talking about the black woven fabric? If this is the material you are talking about you can purchase the same type of tape at just about any RV dealer. If it is really bad you can purchase the fabric and replace it.

Mine came from the factory with oops tape on the bottom of my slide. It's holding up well. Better than the fabric. The tape kinda looks like they heated it as it appears harder and kinda melted looking.

Welcome to the group!. Glad you're here.

I would try something like gorilla tape first. It would be the easiest and cheapest. Also try to find out why it is tearing in the first place. There may be a screw protruding doing it.

Thanks everybody for the ideas. Yes, it is the black woven material. I thought there might be specific tape. I've been looking for something on the thinner side so it doesn't get wadded up when in use. I'll check for a snag, but I suspect the previous owner may have caught something underneath the slide when running it in. I'm about to add the extra seal that "shooter" described in another post. Figured I'd fix the rips in the fabric while I'm down there. (Our first trip with the new 5th wheel we drove through a rainstorm and the carpet by the rear of the slide was soaked. Took 2 days to dry out.)

Great forum by the way.

welcome welcome welcome You might want to get the slide adjusted, if it leaked while in the closed position, there is an adjustment for that. That also might be the reason the plastic wrap is dragging causing it to rip...
What year Wildcat do you have????

It's a 2005 Wildcat. I'm pretty sure the leak was from underneath. The seal on the slide itself doesn't snug up tight against the frame when closed. I suppose it's possible the slide isn't coming in all the way. The sides and top seal nicely though. After poking around this forum a bit, I've seen a few people with a similar problem. The local Wildcat RV shop said it was common and there is a seal upgrade available. He suggested I contact Forest River directly to see if I could get the part for free. We'll see...

I have the same problem, the main slide leaks while traveling and my carpet gets wet. Do you have any details on the seal upgrade? Thanks!

The seal upgrade is much like shooters upgrade, it is a long rubber wiper type seal that runs along the bottom of the slide. Probably got the idea from shooter.

Look at my mods link below in regard to the seal I installed.

Re: How to repair torn slide out fabric?

The fabric under my slide had a small tear on it. Nothing major yet, so I bought some black gorilla duct tape. It only lasted four slide operations before the slide started balling it up and making a sticky mess. I took it by the dealer and they fixed it the right way. The special tape they used matched the fabric and was a good fix. They charged me $60.00 for roughly four feet of tape. It didn't take me long to figure out, that I am in the wrong business. LOL. I'm just glad it was fixed.

Ok, I found the tape people have been recommending. It's called "scrim shield tape". Also known as belly tape. It's around $55 for a 4" x 180' roll. Here's one link: http://www.dyersonline.com/scrim-shield-180-roll-of-under-belly-tape.html but you can also find it on Amazon for the same price with free shipping. I just placed the order, we'll see how it works out. Thanks everybody for the info.

Cool. New location for buying it. Adding it to BM's. I usually buy it by the foot from my dealer.
