Going to Palo Duro Canyon State Park and mountain driving
We are going to Palo Duro State Park and have heard the roads are very steep getting to the campground. Can anyone give me advise? Also should I use manual on my truck and maybe 2 or 3 and let the truck do a lot of the braking? I don't have any experience driving in mountains, so your help would be appreciated. I am a Florida boy, all flat roads:)
Thanks, Tom

Do most of my traveling in the mountains. Most are 5, 6 or 7 % grades although I have encountered 14% near Escalante, Utah. My 2005 Silverado Duramax/Allison does a fantastic job. Use your "trailer tow" button and watch your RPMs. Never RV'd in Texas but I suspect the Rocky Mountains are as hilly a country as any.

We learned last summer for a real mountains. None here in WI.
Took lots of advice from all here. Just took my time and learned where my truck liked the rpm's and watched the temp gauge. Worked out well. By no means am I a pro now or anything as many mountain veterns here are, But after you do it, you will feel more comfortable doing it. I used Tow/Haul with the Allision Transmission brake. Worked good. An engine brake would even be better.

Hey Tom I live here in Amarillo. That road is not that bad,It's a little narrow but you will have no problems. Just use a lower gear. There is some construction going on right now but should finish by months end. Pulled my FW down there with no problems. When are you taking the trip? Get res the closer you get to summer.

We will be there on thursday 3/24 for 5 days. When you say use a lower gear should I just slow down and let the tow mode work or use the manual say 2nd gear? I know you don't have a Chevy but?

Don't over speed the engine when you're running lower gears.
