Looking for a Battery Box

Post by HookMeUp on 3/19/2011, 4:39 am

I am trying to find a battery box to match the factory black battery box that is mounted in the floor of the front compartment. I've done all kinds of searches and can't find one that matches. Anyone know which brand this is?

First off welcome to the Forum. You should be able to to call Kyle at FR parts dept 574-206-7600 and order one. It might cost a little more but it will match. Happy RVing. Jim

If you're wanting to add an auxiliary battery to your unit, you may want to do what myself and several others have done, remove your recessed box and install a (2) battery box in it's place. I covered up the cutout on mine with riveted sheet metal. Here's a link for reference. http://www.wildcatcamperforum.com/t2404-a-second-battery?highlight=battery

I have to agree with Specktout. If you're adding a second battery seal off that recess and add the batteries side by side. That recessed battery just made that space awkward and you actually gain some floor space because you move the batteries over during the process. As for a matching battery box, I just got one @ Wal Mart when I had 2 batteries, didn't worry too much about the venting.

Venting on batteries should be taken [b]VERY SERIOUSLY a Gentlemen that lives across the road from me had a battery explode in his RV last week when he was moving some items near the uncovered battery and made contact with the posts. He had battery acid all over the compartment and its contents, lucky for him no acid got on him. Just my 2 cents worth. Jim

Put a tablespoon or two of straight 30W oil in each cell, will cut down on gassing and evaporation. Having said that, gassing shouldn't be much of an issue unless you're equalizing. And as pourous as that compartment is, shouldn't be a problem. When I equalize, I just leave the caps off, the battery box lids off, and the hatch open during the procedure. Most accidents with batteries, especially wet cell batteries are usually operator error.

I agree TC. I added battery boxes to all my past units as well as my current unit without venting to the outside. My first trailer a 1970 had the battery inside under the dinette bench right beside the furnace in a standard battery box from the factory and never blew.

If you dead short a battery, it's going to blow vented to the outside or not. The guy who had fully exposed batteries wasn't thinking. I'd never use a battery without a box and lid on a RV. If you go cheap and don't use a box and or lid, at least put covers on battery connections to prevent shorting.

I've got the sealed AGM batteries, I think these don't off gas anyway, please correct me if I'm wrong. I like the idea of putting a plate over that recess, having that battery in that hole is ackward anyway.

I can not cover them because of FR mess up. So I guess I sue FR if they explode or I is a dumb Portagie for keeping the trailer. alco
