black streaks on front nose

Post by maxum1989 on 3/14/2011, 1:42 pm

The most annoying thing about keeping my trailer clean is the black streaks that develop on the front nose. I use black streak remover on the sides but I have been told to definitely NOT use this product on the front nose. Is this good advise? It is SO tempting to use it as it makes the removal process so easy. But, if it is going to do some kind of damage then of course it would be a bad idea. I scrub pretty hard to try and remove these black streaks but they never seem to totally come off. There is always a small hint that never goes away and then the next year they look even worse. Any advise or different methods out there?

I do clean my roof from time to time but that still doesn't stop the streaks from showing up. I am probably up on the roof cleaning it 4 or 5 times a year. Should I be cleaning it more often?

I think you need to come clean mine. Laughing I might get up there to clean it once a year.

I wonder if you could run a bead of caulk across the top of the front cap at the roof joint to prevent water from dripping off the front. I'm not sure how effective it would be, but it could help divert the water to the edges.

I was told the sides were fiberglass and the front nose was covered in some kind of gel coat. I sure hope that it can be determined that the black streak remover can be used on the front cap with no ill effect. That would be problem solved.

I have thought about the bead of caulk across the top to divert the water but it would have to be built up a little too high. Therefore not my first choice for a solution.
Tomorrow I think I might go out and try and see if there is any contact info on the bottle of streak remover. See if they have any insight on this.

How often is determined by how dirty; but I don't clean as often as you are. I read just the other day that black streaks are come from the roof and the oxidation of the EPDM membrane. Are you using a cleaner designed for rubber roofs?

When our Rig is Parked between Trips and I am not running the refrigerator I raise the front jacks quite a bit which seems to help a lot with reducing Black streaks on the front cap. Just my .02 worth. Jim

The sides are also gel coat and the front should be cleaned same way as side

I used Bleche-Wite (for cleaning up white wall tires) on the front cap to get some yellow stains off. It literally ate the yellow off (fissed). Nothing else I tried worked. I waxed it after that not knowing if it also compromised the gel coat. It's been 3 years since I did that and it's still the "off white" I'd expect. It works well to clean the rubber roof prior to resealing trouble areas. I'm sure it's not something you want to apply as a regular cleaner. It's really caustic. But it will remove the dirt to make the roof as white as can be. Probably removing some of the UV resistance too.

I've never had a problem with streaks on the front. I was getting them on the side until I installed gutter extensions.

Same here, I never get any on my front cap. I added gutter extensions too and no more streaks.

I have the gutter extentions as well so the sides are not a problem with black streaks. The front nose however gets them all the way across about 1" apart so there are LOTS of them. They are the worst on the bottom half of the nose. I am going to try using the black streak remover and then make sure that I put a wax on after that. I am assuming that the black streak remover removes the black streaks plus perhaps any wax or polish that is on there as well. Perhaps this is a reason why I have heard that is should not be used on the nose.

I have used the black streak remover on the nose quite often without any problems. I was unaware that there may be issues. I guess I can be the test dummy.

I use Black streak remover on the nose of mine. I have had no issues either. I to Clean mine multiple times a year, When I am done washing with black streak and a mild detergent i will use light compound on the nose to help clean it more deeply then I use a good cleaner wax (Maguiers). I do this as the guys in are group say a little excessive. But I have always good luck. If you stay up on it the black streaks will sit on the wax and can be wiped clean. I will say that the type of cleaner you use does make a diffrence I have used Streak X which worked well, just bought another brand but have not tried yet. Good luck
