Should there be a grease fitting on my hubs????

Post by BayouDude on 3/9/2011, 4:32 am

I have a 2009 Wildcat 32QBBS and was told that the bearings were maintenance free just needing repacking every so often. I am a little skeptical of this as every trailer I have ever owned has had grease fittings. I recently lost a center cap and I can see where there are internal threads on the hub to accept a grease fitting. Question is should there be one there?? I towed the Cat several hundred miles last year with zero problems but I want to give everything a good look before we start using this thing again this season.

I have a rubber insert in my end of the axle and under there is a zerk threaded into the axle. Seems as though it may of come off. I have the lippert axles. hope this helps

Mine have round aluminum caps with no rubber boot. Tonight I am going to pop off one of the others and see if anything is missing.

You probably have sealed bearings. Lippert calls them SBS. Here's a link to the owners manual http://www.lippertcomponents.com/OwnersManuals/Trailer-Axle/11-10-10-Sealed%20Bearing-Web.pdf

Sealed bearings are much better. If you have a grease zerk, I have been told, you do not need to use it. Mainly there for boats that go in water. If you do decide to use it be very careful. Do not use an air powered grease gun. You can blow out the back seal. Then the mess begins. Shocked

I had them (grease zerks on the Bearing Buddies) removed; that way there is no risk. The previous owner of our WC had gotten grease on the brakes which cost several hundred to repair. Not worth the risk. I have the bearings repacked at the beginning of every season and after 5,000 miles during a season.

I repack every 4,000 also. Just check and tighten nut if needed in between. Takes about 2 seasons for me to do that. Adjust brakes as needed in between also.
