Need some Rx advice

Post by TC on 3/1/2011, 2:04 pm

My DW had been taking Darvon, or the generic version propoxyphene for years for knee and back pain. She can't take codeine derivitives so Darvon is the ONLY pain med she has been able to take that actually helps in managing the pain without making her sick to her stomach or itching all over. But, the maker of Darvon and Darvocet has suddenly taken these pain killers off the US market after a seemingly successful run of over 50 years!

Our Doctor says the US recall is a scam by the pharmaceutical company to get an older CHEAPER drug off the market so they can introduce a next generation med that costs a ton more. Don't know if this is true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me any.

Anyone get their Rxs filled across either border? I'm hoping we can find a legitimate pharmacy that doesn't sell counterfeit drugs where we can go to continue to get her Propoxyphene refilled. Any help, advice, suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Earl, no fun being in constant pain. I know first hand what its like, so I have great compassion for her situation.

I'll add that even if folks here don't get their Rxs elsewhere, if they know of a direction to point me in where I can get more info, that would help too.

After having many surgeries, and two hip replacements, kidney stones, etc. The only pain medication I can take without stomach problems is Tramadol. I do not smoke, or drink alcohol, or drugs, so I can not take pain killers like Hydrocodine, Norco etc. without getting an upset stomach.
Fortunately at this time in my life, pain is not an ongoing thing, so I don't take anything unless a bout with kidney stones. You might want to consult a doctor about Tramadol. It relieves pain for about two hours, and is considered a mild pain killer, but it works for me when I need it.
I would not recommend any drug for constant pain. I would consult another doctor to see if there is a permanent solution. Being on pain killers forever is not a good idea. We had a young (21) friend who overdosed on pain pills and died.

I've had to be on pain meds for several years dealing with a fused neck, degenerative spine, bilateral sciatica and screwed up knees. My doc had me sign a pain management contract stating that I would only get my Rx from him, and that I would have it filled only at one pharmacy. Around here, they take abuse very seriously.
Had to move up from oxycodone to oxycontin 24/7 for two years, but never got addicted. I think the addiciton aspect comes when you take it not having pain, but just for the high. At least that's what I've been told by the pain management team. Anyway, I was able to back down to oxycodone after two series of PT and now only take it for breakthru pain, which fortunately isn't very often. I've never cared for pain meds, cuz they make me sleepy and fuzzy-minded.

My wife is in the same boat as I am in that she has chronic lower back pain from two disc surgeries as well as two knee surgeries. She's a nurse to boot, so she has to be on her feet alot! That doesn't help her any. The big difference is she can't take just anything to relieve the pain.

I'll tell her about Tramadol. I appreciate the tip.
