Installing a Carefree Slide Topper Awning. Does this look right?

Post by 10-36 on 2/24/2011, 2:19 pm

I purchased a Carefree of Colorado SOK II Slide Topper awning and have a question about the universal brackets that attach to the wall of the slide out room. The instructions read to install the brackets as indicated below.

This would place the bracket on top of the vinyl trim molding that runs horizontal along the roof line and vertical down both sides of the face wall on the Wildcats.

I spoke with a local RV shop and looked at other Wildcats with slide toppers. The RV shop said it was acceptable to mount the bracket just under and next to the vinyl molding. This also appears to be how it is done on the other Wildcats I have looked at. So I installed them as below.

The 7 #12x1" TEK screws that are used to fasten each bracket to the sidewall don't seem to grab snugly. Is this seem normal? I used sealant around the bracket and in all the screw holes. I'm nervous that the screws will not hold.

I'm looking for some feedback from others. Does this seem correct? If you have a slide topper on your Wildcat, is this how your brackets are installed?

Thanks!

Wish I could help you out on this 10-36, but I don't have any toppers installed on my rig. Hopefully someone will chime in sooner or later and let you know your'e on the right track....

I don't have any either but they "appear" to be where I'm use to seeing them on other units. If it doesn't hold you can use some good anchors.

Should I need to go this route, do you have any suggestions for anchors on a fiberglass wall Mopar Earl?

Sorry, I don't. I'd ask a dealership as they may know. I know there are many types and I've used some really good ones but I've never tried to use them on RV side walls.

I also don't have toppers, but instead of using a sealer under the bracketts, I personally would use a product called Sudaflex 40FC.
not only does seal, it sticks things together. It is used on car bodywork to hold wings (fenders) in place. I use it at work on mobile cabins to seal from the weather.

Brandon, I have the toppers and the brackets are located at the same location that you have yours mounted. I purchased my cat used with them already installed. The outside edge of the brackets are slightly pulled away from the siding ( I think it's due to the spring tension ) and there is a small gap behind the bracket on the end. I didn't get a chance to do anything yet but I have cabinets all along the top of my slide above my dinette and sofa. It appears that your model layour is similar as far as having cabinets along the top. I am planning on putting a steel plate insde the cabinets directly behind the exterior bracket and through bolting it with stainless steel bolts. The toppers get a lot of movement when they start flapping in the wind.

I have toppers, and have installed them, along with three others on the same layout. That is the proper position.

So far, after 2 years, ours are all holding fine. Just don't overtighten those screws.

That is exactly where I mounted ours last year. I hit stud material only on a few of the screws but caulked everything with Dicor caulk and it held up just fine. There is a little flex but was never a problem.
I will install toppers on out new fiver as well. New slides are a little different.
Keep in mind, behind the rub rail is stud material, try to hit that some if possible.
