Acadia National park

Post by Eric on 2/16/2011, 1:33 pm

Has anyone camped in Acadia? I here there are low bridges in the park that would prohibit most fifth wheels. If so can anyone recommend a campground close by. Thanks Eric

We've camped on Mt. Desert Island, both times at the KOA. Nice CG. I'm not sure what facilities are available in the NP. The low bridges you refer to are the carriage trail bridges which are closed to motor vehicles. We did the paved circle inside the park and I don't remember and low bridges.

I have a friend who goes there a lot. I will ask him if there are any campgrounds inside the park that you can get a 5er in. I went there a couple years ago and stayed just outside the park at Hadleys point. This campground is only a few miles from the entrance to the park and has full hookups.

Was there in 2005 and going back in the Fall this year. We stay at Smuggler's Den in Southwest Harbor. The Island Explorer bus picks up in the campground, and is kind of centrally located on the island.

I was in the park last summer and had no problems. Acadia is one of my favorite parks.

We stayed in Bass Harbor Campground and it was fine.

A drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain is a must.

We were gonna tent camp at Bass Harbor but the black flys / other bitters were so bad we opted for a BB on the water.
Acadia is definately one of my Favorites. Keep an eye out for the rock climbers, Thats well worth stopping to watch for a while.

We have stayed at Bar Harbor campground and Bar Harbor KOA. Both were adequate for our needs. They are not theme parks (Acadia is the attraction). When we stayed at Bar Harbor Campground, it was cash/checks only for payment. That may have changed.

There is limited RV camping in the park. It is for smaller units and no hook ups. National Park sites can be reserved.

If you can get a clear day, do the trip up Cadillac Mountain so as to arrive before sunrise. To me it is one of the great wonders of the world to see the sun just start to peek over the horizon. It's like watching a brilliant diamond emerge. Also, a sail on one of the old four masted fishing schooners is a treat. They even let you hoist the sail for them.

Eric,
I just heard from my friend who says the only larger rigs he has seen inside the park were in the overflow parking lots. Sounds like it is just to tight to fit a larger rig. He recommends one of the private parks outside. Hope this helps.
