Slide Moving out on own

Post by onetonford on 2/14/2011, 1:40 pm

OK guys I was in the process of installing some switches for the landing legs and back stabilizers to keep somebody from cranking them up/down when I'm not around. Any way while removing battery covers I struck the rubber that forest river puts over the Hydraulic pump and for a few seconds it came on and the slides came out about 6 inches when I investegated I found a rocker switch attached to the pump base plate covered by the Rubber I never knew it was there untill now what really scared me was the fact that it is possible to have some thing bump into the rubber and cause the slide to move out. If that was to happen while driving I would hate to think what might have happen so I have moved the switch and put it on a Dissconnect switch also. So the rest of you should check to see if you have a switch there it could be a accident waiting to happen.

It's a backup switch. I have mine disconnected.

I also have a toggle switch in line so I can disconnect the power from it. Same as outside switch.

I figured that was a backup switch I just wish they had told me of it. But what gets me is when they put the rubber strap or shielding over it was almost pushing the switch to extend slides if it get just a little bit tighter it would do it on its own. I remember reading somewhere that somebodies slide would creep out on a cold day possilbily from the rubber shrinking enough in the cold to do that for an instant to do exactly what happened to me by pure accident I just wanted to warn others that did not know about this switch to check it out for themselves before it does the same. I also found a leak on one of the quick coulpers under the rubber. By the way the inline fuse is only hooked to the wires going to the inside remote switch and not the bypass so pulling the fuse won't stop it from working.

onetonford, My WC has the same setup. I was more concerned with the circutbreakers shorting out when stored items (junk) Wink moved around when traveling. I made a metal shield to protect the pump and circutbreakers Used the rubber to line the inside of the metal shield.

I found the same problem with my rubber strip, it was tight enough so if you just brushed up against it with your hand it would activate the system. I moved the rubber over about a 1/2-3/4 of an inch to keep it from riding on top of the rocker switch. I also found one of my quick disconnect valves leaking, I went ahead and removed both of the valves and put caps on them coming out of the manifold.
Not sure why they installed the rocker switch in the first place.

New one for me need to go looking for it. It appears some of U all have a switch to disconnect power from the pump. Can I ask why?

The service tech pointed out the switch when we did our walkthrough. Like Roadrash I added a shield using a couple of "L" brackets and a 1 x 6 ten inches long about two inches in front of the switch/pump to ensure nothing bumped into the switch.
