Landing legs

Post by Sean on 2/14/2011, 8:15 am

I have started having a problem with my inner landing legs, one is getting really hard to extract from the outer. Has any one had this problem?

You have something lodged between them, fine dirt/sand, or either their Bent. Did you hit something ?

No impact damage as far as I know. I suppose I will have to put the front of the cat on axle stands and try to remove to find out what the problem is.

Re: Landing legs

Sean,

The best solution seems to be a liberal spraying with WD-40 on all surfaces of the inner leg and up into the larger (outer) fixed part of the leg. Do this periodically to mainain the lubrication. I also try to be certain not to raise the inner portion too far into the outer portion. If the bottom edge of the inner leg gets flush with the bottom edge of the outer leg it is likely to get stuck and hard to gt back out.

That has been my experience. Hope it is useful for you.

I have not had time yet but I hope to before I go away next thursday, If I don't get time I will try the WD 40 route for a short term fix.

I've found that anything with grease or oil on it that is open to the atmosphere has a nasty habit of strongly attracting dirt, grit, sand, etc. This can make a bad situation much worse, and grease would be much worse than WD 40. If dirt is not your problem, check with a straight edge to see if they seem bent. Of course, you first have to lower the legs, which can be a "catch 22".

Yes, the grease attracted alot of the local landscape while we camped at various places. I ended up scrapping and cleaning with dawn while the legs were fully extended. After that, I sprayed with dry lube for the slide and never had a problem again.
