First Car

Post by AVid on 2/2/2011, 12:09 pm

We were sitting around waiting for the snow to stop, and got into a discussion about first cars. I'm not talking about Mom or Dads car that you borrowed, but your very first car that you owned.

Mine was a 1965 Chevy Corvair. My Dad sold it to me and he made me pay every cent. Next was a 1970 Camaro Z28. Really wish I had that one back.

I'll bet everyone remembers their first auto...what's yours?

John

My first two vehicles were Jeep CJ5's. '78 and a '79 respectively.

I spent nearly every dime I made on those Jeeps! Learned much about auto mechanics as I was always breaking, replacing or modding.

I still love CJ's all these years later.

1962 corvair from when my dad ran a gas station in San luis Obispo and he had accquired it for the Orignal owner it was stolen out of texas somewhere and they blew the engine in california. and my dad towed it and the owner didn't want it back so he gave it to me as a project. I rebuilt the engine from pieces that a family friend extra parts from his dune buggy. That was the car that I took drivers training in. Lost it in a few years due to my dad going bankrupt and it was in his name due to my age at the time.
Next car came around the end of High school and my dad helped pay for it. It was a 1965 1/2 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT with a High Performance 390 and about 16 set of tires I went threw in the course a few years. Boy could that car Go. peelout

1966 GMC pickup that my grandparents gave me. Was an old farm truck with a six cylinder and three on the tree. My dad, a chevy mechanic, built me a 350 for it, stock, and helped me put it in and change out the three speed to a four speed with granny low. We also changed out the rear end to a 273 gear ratio for better gas mileage. I would stop light race it and only had to shift once because of the high geared rear end. It would run 80 in third.

Mine was a 1955 DeSoto. It was destroyed in 1967 on the two lane US Highway 61 in a head on collosion at 60 MPH in Southern Missouri. The speed limit on that stretch of hwy was 70 MPH. This was before Interstate 55 was completed.
That DeSoto was a smooth riding machine.

I walked 14 miles to buy my first car...a 1965 Plymouth Fury III. 318 automatic and power steering. Nothing else. No power brakes, no AC. But what a great car.

I know this will date myself, but here goes. While stationed in England in 1960 my buddy and I together brought a "1939 (Mark II (I think)) Jaguar Converable". Big chrome headlights. Yellow with (4) suicide doors. Got at least 5 miles to the gallon. Cannot even find it on the internet now. Must have been very few of them made. What a bomb but it sure got the attention of the girls. Wish I had taken a picture of it.

My first was a Honda CB350 street bike, Worked all summer for it. I was 15 then, and you could run a street bike with a learners permit. Sweet. Sold all my cows I had hustled from uncles and my dad at 16 and bought a Toyota Hilux pickup. Man it was ugly but it would go like a 4x4 and it was tuff. Sold that and moved up to a Brand new 79' Ford F100 in the 12th grade.

My first car was a 1968 Ford Torino. Presidential blue with a white "C" stripe on the sides. It was a sweet looking car and had a Nascar look to it as Richard Petty drove one for a year on the track.

I was a senior in high school (1974) and my dad gave me a 1965 Plymouth Satelite; only catch, I had to rebuild the blown engine before I could drive it. So, I tore into it and got it done. My dad helped, but mostly stood back and watched me learn. Like most of you, I'd like to say "I wish I still had that car", but better not because I sold it to buy an engagement ring for my wife. Car's gone but I still have her. Good trade.

My dads brothers both had cows on adjoining property. So whenever their cows would have calfs I'd always be hitting them up for a calf. Before long I had a pretty big herd of my own. They were just happy for me to show some interest in farming. They all had girls that weren't into anything. thats one time it paid off being the only male around.
