Doggone it!

Doggone it!
Myself, my wife, my sister, and my cousin have paid for a 14 day tour of Egypt and we were scheduled to leave on the 9th of February. With the current climate of violence and demonstrations in Egypt, it sure looks like we won't be taking this trip, and I was soooo looking forward to going to Egypt again.

Our Government is saying travel to Egypt is OK as long as you stay away from any demonstrations.

Yes, we've been checking advisories from the UK and our own state department here in the US. Staying away from demostations is good advice but first you have to know where they currently are and where new demonstrations might pop up. The city of Suez is completely out of control.
Opposition leader under house arrest, a curfew has been extended to all of Egypt, and police are using live ammunition on demostrators. This is not a country I want to visit right now.

Just watched the News on the BBC. and it does not look like a place that I would want to visit right now, it looks very volatile.
Go further north and visit the U.K.

Re: Doggone it!
I was just listening to NPR radio and the american lady thats there now on the radio said no one would talk to her because she's american. Of course they're all blaming us for everything again, even saying the tear gas cans their lobing at them are USA cans.

Re: Doggone it!
They just showed one of those spent tear gas canisters on NBC news tonight. It clearly reads "made in the U.S.A." I guess weapons are the only thing we make in this country anymore. Everything else seems to be made in China.

Ha ha ha ha. Travel insurance, what a joke that's turning out to be. DW and I have been informed of the "fine print." All insurance companies have the following listed under exclusions, no coverage for any loss resulting directly or indirectly from "war (declared or undeclared), acts of war, civil disorder or unrest." However, our travel insurance will cover any loss if we are hijacked or there is a terrorist event at our destination within 30 days of our scheduled arrival. So if someone sets off a car bomb in Cairo in the next 9 days we will be covered.
At this point it looks like we will be taking a hefty financial hit because of this "civil unrest" in Egypt.

I am just watching the news on the BBC and they where interviewing an American couple who have been trying to leave there hotel for 2 days, what sort of holiday are they having? I think the travel insurance would be getting off lightly, if the paid off a high percentage of your cost, what would it cost to repatriate you and your family if it turns into a full blown civil war.

Re: Doggone it!
Well, we would have returned from Egypt yesterday had we been able to go on our tour. We also received word that the tour company won't be able to refund our money. I've submitted a claim to our travel insurance but the customer service rep didn't think that would be approved either. What a fiasco!

Re: Doggone it!
Is there a chance that your tour company can give you a partial credit for a future trip?

Re: Doggone it!
The tour company wants us to reschedule but Delta Airlines still isn't flying passengers to Egypt. Also with work schedules and family commitments the four of us probably won't be able to go anytime this year.
I'm not sure I want to go to Egypt until they become more stable. Right now the military in in charge of the country until the elections in September. After the elections who knows what will happen. If a religious or politcal group feel the elections were fixed turmoil could again consume the country again.
