leaking hose on freshwater tank fill

Post by boyce on 1/22/2011, 9:43 am

This past week I have been fixing the water tank bulge and decided to re-route the vent hose also. After getting everything back together, I started filling the tank to check for leaks and to make sure the vent would work properly, I noticed a leak (more of a drip) coming from where my fill hose connects to the tank. I now have 3 hose clamps on this connection and have slowed it down but it is still leaking. It is possible I have been leaking since I got the trailer because its not a lot of water and this is the only time I have looked. Has anybody else had this problem?

The filling hose could be a little bit hard and not letting itself seal against the spigot properly so having 3 hose clamps on there might not help. Or there could be a slight split on the spigot which is allowing water to leak.

Boyce is the leak coming from the hose or can you get close and see if it might be a pin hole crack in the tank at the connection.

If it is the hose you could try wrapping it with Teflon tape and putting the hose back on it will take up the void space and help to get a tighter seal.

If it is the tank it is not under any pressure you can get something like JB plastic weld Epoxy and fix the tank.

Good luck

I have looked at the hose real good and cannot see any holes or cracks. The water is coming from between the hose and filler neck and still leaks whether I stuff the hose all the way on or only half way on the filler neck so I think the tank is not leaking. I will try the teflon tape and post back.

I had similar issue after I fixed my bulging tank also. I talked to my local RV shop in town and they recommended silicone on the filler neck then slide the hose back on and tighten clamp. Worked great, have not had leak since.

The teflon tape did not work. My next step was going to be silicone, I will let everyone know how that goes. Lograf, did you let the silicone dry before tightening the clamp?

No, I put the hose on and tightened the clamp immediately. I did let it sit overnight before I tested it to make sure it had time to cure. Recently I have seen some silicones that claim you can expose them to water within 30-60 minutes I think.

I will have to update later. The stuff I had in the garage is all the white acrylic caulk, so I will wait until it warms up tomorrow to hopefully get a good seal. Thanks for the help so far.

Sorry boyce use the teflon trick all the time on our pressure washing hose barbs hope the silicone works. When you say until it warms up tomorrow, just how warm is that, here in PA it would be oh about 21F

Rich, after I went to the store for the silicone it was after dark so I didn't want to work with it and go into the night (which is probably not as cold as your high) without a little set up time. It is 67f now so I hope it will be fine. I have a smooth fitting on the tank, and while the teflon slowed it down it did not stop the leak. For me a leak is a leak, but just to qualify this one I caught all of the water that leaked when filling the tank and got a total of 3.5oz.

Black Silicone Adhesive in a tube works the best.

I ended up with the clear silicone rtv sealant and it did the trick. I filled it up just now and watched for leaks from empty to completely full an not one drop of water. Now, where can I get that black tape to put back I had to cut to put back on the underbelly??

This is what came on my RV. It is called Scrim Shield. Comes in a very large roll so I hope your RV dealer stocks it. Mine does and sells it by the foot. I keep a little extra on hand. Anyway this what you are looking for. RV dealer have a catalog that that carries this.

I have a catalog with a product called scrim shield. It sounds like the right stuff but, for the price, I wanted to be sure

When I had to repair mine I went to the RV dealer and was looking to get some belly tape as it's referred to and he suggested that I go to the hardware store and buy Gorilla brand 2" wide tape. He said it's the same thing as the belly tape they sell and alot cheaper. Gorilla tape is around $8.00 for a 50 ft roll. You find it in the same aisle as Duct tape. You need to make sure the under belly is really clean. If it's not real warm outside a heat gun works great to warm up the underbelly and tape after it's applied to get the adhesive real sticky. It's held up fine so far. I didn't have the scrim shield available locally and due to the price I thought I'd try the Gorilla tape.

boyce - U have the correct stuff but the price is high because you get more than you will ever use. That is why I go to my dealer and buy it by the foot.

Thanks all, for the help. I will hopefully start back together with everything tomorrow. My local repair shop should be able to give me a by the foot price. I will also check out the gorilla tape, if its anything like their glue I already have several uses for that stuff.

Have fun. I feel scrim shield has better sticking power than the others and it looks original.
