Double Stacking Spares

Post by Mainer on Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:27 am

I been contemplating this idea for awhile. I had to remove the spare off the Wildcat because of towing a trailer behind it. I double stacked the spares under my Dodge 2500 4x4. It is solid and has a firm hold on both. I only going to do this on long road trips and I am aware that it hangs lower but I don't expect on doing any off road with them on, especially with the RV behind it.

Anyone have any comments or concerns doing this?

welcome to the forum from the U.K.
I think that it's quite a novel solution I don't think the tyre hangs that low, there are cars in the U.K. where the spare is a lot lower to the road.

Looks like a great Idea to me, did you have to extend the chain that comes down ?

And welcome to the forum.

Thanks for welcomes, The 1/4" cable is long enough that I can actually wrap it around the receiver hitch then push the stacked tires with my feet while sitting on my butt and then feed the cable by hand to the bottom tire and then reel it up like normal.

welcome to the forum Mainer...Looks good, the only concern if it is a concern at all would be weight. I really like that idea.

My only concern would be the ability of the cable to hold both tires. If it were only a static load, it would probably be fine. There will be bumps and this will put added strain on the cable. Probably be fine though. Good luck, and great idea.

What he said as well as the winch housing and the frame work holding the extra weight.

To be on the safe side, I think I would run a cheap ratchet strap from the frame rails under the tires. You don't want those dropping out of there when towing.

driverguy that was what I was thinking also. I think the mechanism its self would do but a ratchet strap would give added insurance and peace of mind

Might just be me, but I don't really trust that winch to hold even one tire/wheel. Here is what I did with my Cat spare:

Scottz what or how did you use to mount the spare there?

Either some long bolts or threaded rod. In the third photo, you can see where the bolts come into the compartment. I made sure to hit angle iron. I've thought about getting a spare tire winch (like the one used under the back of a pick up) and using that instead of bolting it up there. Bolted up like that, it won't be real convenient to use; I just hope I don't have to.
