1st camping trip from NH to FLA
Hello fellow campers ...
this is our first time traveling with our 2007 wildcat 27. We have been a seasonal at our camp ground since 1987. I am going to retire in April and in May we are going to trailer our Cat to visit our children from southern NH to Charlotte, NC ... to Atlanta, GA ... to Tampa, FLA ... to Mertle Beach and back home to NH ...
My questions are...
1. should I make reservations now or just wing it?
2. how many miles per day should I travel?
3. do you travel with the frig on?
In April I'm going to have new tires (get rid of China tires) and pack the wheel bearings.
any sugestions will help.

Hello Salvi and
to the forum.
Here is some answers to your questions:
1. should I make reservations now or just wing it?
I would wing it, get a campground directory book(KOA, or Trailer Life, or Woodall) to take with you and have DW look them up as you are going down the road. These directories also give ratings. When you pick out a place, you can call that day as you are traveling.
2. how many miles per day should I travel?
When we travel, we leave at 9:00AM and stop around 3:00PM, depending on where the book tells us where the next campground is that we've picked out.
3. do you travel with the frig on?
YES, no problem with doing this at all. Just remember, you cant go through tunnels with the tanks on.
If your tires are over 4 years old, I would give them a really good inspection. Mine were 4 years old and all the inside sidewalls were cracked.

Salvi welcome to the forum. I agree with Oldelmer1.
I would only consider making a reservation, if there is a specific campground in Myrtle Beach you would like to get into, especially if you want to be near the beach. The only draw back to that is it puts you on schedule of having to be at that campground on that day.
Sounds like a great trip, and congrats on retirement

On weeknights, we usually don't worry about reservations. We'll sometimes make reservations on the weekends.... this kind of depends on the time of year. We usually have reservations at our destination. Occasionally, if we are going to passing through an area during a special event, we'll make reservations in advance so we don't pull in someplace and there isn't a spot for us.
Like Tom and Sharon, we also travel about 6 hours a day.... and stop around 3pm. Coming home from Florida in December, we drove about 7 hours one day because weather made us decide to stay over one additional night on the MS Gulf Coast.
We travel with the fridge on.
We had two blowouts and two flats with the original tires... possibly because of the tires, or possibly because of defective rims. We found cracks in a couple of the rims.

When you hit Atlanta, I highly recommend staying at Stone Mountain park Campground. Get one of the big sites thats on the lake side but in the same section as the office.
I'd make a res for that and the beach. I recommend any of the campgrounds located on the beach.
I run my fridge also traveling. inspect the bearings really good when packing.

Re: 1st camping trip from NH to FLA
Thanks to all ...
We just returned from our month long trip. After a major problem with camping world and tires we got on our way and had a great trip without any hitches.
Our last week was at myrtle beach ... and ... it was motorcycle week. but we were able to cope because we have motorcycle week here in N.H. ... just very noisey with lots of interesting sights!
We are back in our seasonal campground at lake winni ... and ready to go boating.
Thanks to all for the good info.

Glad you had a great trip AND that it was without problems. Sorry you had problems with Camping World and your tires before getting started.
