Re: Garmin GPS Forum
Thanks oldelmer1...
I'm still torn on which GPS I want. I've rented Garmin 550 Streetpilots w/ Avis and it works really well. It seems the more I look, the more confused I get on which Gramin models offer the most bang for the buck.
This site gives me more information to study.
Thanks,
-Mark

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
Hi Duke,
I think Garmin is probably one of the most popular units. I guess I say that cause I have one.
What ever you do, be sure to get one that speaks street names. I just bought a new Subaru Forester and its GPS does not speak street names.

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
I have a Garmin and a hand held Magellan. No problems with either one. But I will say that Garmins customer service & repair are second to none. My old Garmin needed fixing and I sent it back to them. By the end of the week I had it back and it has been fine ever since. I have no experience with Magellans customer service.

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
My Lowrance IWay GPS is getting old (about 4 years) but it still works well so I can't justify replacing it yet. Its been a couple of years since I updated the maps and guess I'll do that again this year. But I have been "eyeing" the TeleType WorldNav 7000. It has a great feature I haven't found in any other GPS. When planning your route, it allows you to enter your vehicle's length, weight, and height ... then calculates the best route for your vehicle. It even allows you to enter your HazMat info (but I don't think I'd be using that one)

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
Wow...that is pretty in-depth information you can load on the WorldNav GPS. I hope you wouldn't be carrying any hazmat items with you...unless they consider anything over 15% alcohol hazardous ????

Hi Duke,
My Garmin only shows campgrounds and state parks cause I have downloaded the information into the POINTS OF INTEREST(POI) section of the Garmin. If you dont download the info, you dont see it.
The link I posted up top has the POI's in an excel spreadsheet.

Duke,
Be sure to go here:
http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html
For some tips. Even know you have the newest model ,they basically still work the same as the older ones.
If you need some assistance, just ask.
Also,
We have one of these:

much better that sticking it to the window, and it does stay in place.

Thanks for the information on the Garmin site. I have a Nuvi 650 for Karyn's side and the builtin one for me. We also have one in the laptop so that we can print out maps or directions as we go. You can map your rout on yahoo maps and then download it to your gps. This way you can fine tune it before you go.

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
We need to update our Lowrance or buy a new GPS. The campgrounds/RV parks are very out of date. Hollywood Casino RV Park in South MS is listed as Casino Magic. It's been years since it was Casino Magic. It still works okay, we just tell her we're going to Casino Magic, and she takes us right there, everytime.
Our GPS was a gift from the guys who worked with Scruffy before he retired.

Re: Garmin GPS Forum
Yes, it can be updated. We keep getting reminders on the unit that it is out-of-date. We can get points of interest and other info directly over the net, I believe the map has to be ordered. I haven't looked at their site for a while, hopefully ours hasn't gotten so old they don't support it anymore. I'd be all for updating the one we've got and buying a new one (probably Garmin). That way I can have one to play with while were traveling - it sure does make the time go by quickly.
