WDW trip - December

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 12/3/2010, 2:57 am

We had a good drive over here from Texas. Stayed at a couple casino campgrounds on the way. Had a nice visit with my brother and sis-in-law about an hour from WDW. They'll come down and visit us a couple times while were here.

We got to Fort Wilderness around 10:30 in the morning of Dec 1. It was too early for them to have the drive through check-in posts open, so I went inside to register. I had a list of favorite campsites, and the check-in cast member was able to give us the 4th one on our list. That worked very well. Our campsite is perfect.... very roomy and long.

It's cold here. We rode around a bit last night on our way to Trail's End, and the decorations the other campers set up are awesome! Much more than we've seen in the past. Some of the decorations are "walk-throughs" and people pull of and park their golf carts. Even people driving by in cars are pulling off the road to look. There were at least 3 carriage rides going on, and they are taking people through the campground to see the holiday lights. We have a few lights - not enough to be even the least bit impressive. Our decorations are all patriotic - with a couple spiral lighted trees. We were going to ride around a little more after dinner, but it was just too cold. One of our propane tanks went empty last night, so we're going to take it to the Trading Post and see if they still fill tanks there. So, I guess I better get ready to go.

Here is a picture of our campsite right after we got here, and before we got the screen room set up. I'll post another with the decorations.

It's going to be 44 degrees there in the morning hope you have another blanket to stay warm. Get all the cold weather over with so when we get to Cocoa Beach on the 27th of December I can wear my shorts. We will be in Florida Jan - Mar 2011 cann't wait. It was 22 degrees this A.M. up here in the North Georgia Mountains now that's COLD. Enjoy your Trip. By the way how is your knee holding up? Jim

Jim,
Yesterday was cold - today was pleasant until the sun went down. We've got plenty of blankets, but what is better is our electric mattress pad. We turn it on about half an hour before we go to bed, and it's nice and toasty warm.

Before we left home we bought a wheelchair. Decided we might as well buy instead of rent. It's been a lifesaver. We have the use of it all day, no matter where we go. I got by without it on the trip over, even though the knee went out a few times, I managed okay. Having it here in the World has been a big help. Scruffy says the knee goes out more than he does.

We plan on coming back around the middle of January. I'm afraid to go to the orthopedist in between trips for fear I might be wearing a big uncomfortable cast. So, if I can, I'll wait until late February.

Tom,
This site is very close to our former favorite site #1307. Seems like every time we come to WDW, 1307 is already occupied, so we're glad to have found this one.

The Dr told me for the Double total Knee it would take about 3 to 4 hours. They would have me up on my feet the next day. I will be using a walker. I would or should be home in three days. They would not put me cast. It has to be where I can bend the knees to keep them flexable. A PT would come to the home a couple times a week for the first 2 weeks. After that I would be able to go to the PT's office after that. I can not drive for 6 weeks. The day for the operation is this coming Wed.

Photos.

Tater's brother and sis-in-law are quitting camping, they gave us the screenroom when we stopped to visit with them.

Our nearest neighbor on the "utilities" side of the Cat. We have a big yard - on both sides.

We didn't rent a golf cart from Disney this trip. We rented this from someone who delivers and picks up. At about half the cost of Disney.

We found this mouse in one of the many shops in WDW. Good timing too - our old one was dying. We didn't realize how bad it was until we got the new one.

Tater, did you rent from "Kenny"? The cart you have doesn't look like one of his normal rentals. If you rented from someone else, I'd be interested in hearing how your experience was. I'll need to rent one for a month next August and the company I rented from last time can't deliver to FW anymore, so I'm looking for another option.

That's a great looking site and appears to be on a corner making backing in a little easier. We love the 1300 loop Greenwithenvy I think we may request it next trip, but I'll be down in February to visit my mother and may do a scouting trip and check out the 900 loop a little closer.

Have a great time santa

We had to leave WDW this morning. Right now we are sitting in the KOA in Chattahoochee - one of our favorite campgrounds.

Jeff,
We did rent from Kenny. He can get inside the Fort Wilderness parking lot. The parking lot has changed since we were there last January. The "overflow" lot has been added to the main lot. We can see where there could be problems with non-campers driving around the campground. That could easily be fixed though.

Our new favorite campsite isn't in loop 1300. 1300 has some great looking sites though. Our previous favorite is 1307 (it will always be on our request list), but there are some alongside the canal that look great too.

Next time we go to FW I'll have to get the info from you for the cart rental. When you say half the price, what does it end up costing per day from the outside vender ?

The canal sites would be great this time of year but we usually camp in August so this northerner is looking for all the shade I can get lol! Thanks for the cart info. The reason I didn't think it was from Kenny was because his normally have the roll down sides to keep the cart dry if its raining. I guess there isn't as much need for it in December.

Hope you had a great trip... would love to see more pictures, if you have them.

Re: WDW trip - December

Disney charges by the day. They used to have a weekly rate where it was 7 days for the price of 6, but they discontinued that. Their rate is in the vicinity of $55 to $60 per day. I think last time we rented from them last January, it was around $54.... or maybe that price was from a previous trip.

Kenny has daily, weekly and monthly rates. We arrived at Fort Wilderness on Dec 1, and left on Dec 11, and Scruffy says he thinks our charge for that time was around $317. Our cart seated 4 adults. We were supposed to have curtains, but the person who had the cart before us tore them and actually tore the snaps off the roof. They were brand new curtains, too. They would have brought new curtains or another cart if we had asked. Disney's carts don't have curtains. The roof of Disney's carts extends over the back seat so the passengers on that seat are sheltered a bit from rain. The roof on Kenny's cart only covered the front seat. You can get an idea from the photo in this thread.

Kenny doesn't have a website. He communicates with customers mostly by celphone. He also has an e-mail address where you can reach him.

We're going to rent from Kenny again when we go to Fort Wilderness the end of January.
