Antifreeze

What antifreeze are you using in your T.V. I can not obtain Dex-cool very easy over here and it seems that Dex-cool can also cause problems with gaskets.

Both Chrysler and Ford recommend Zerex G-05 HOAT anti-freeze. That's what I use in my CTD. The HOAT is an acronym for "Hybrid Organic Acid Technology". The slight acidity in the mixture keeps the rust and corrosion down inside the engine. My service manual for the 2004.5 CTD says to change it every 100,000 miles. I'm not sure what GM recommends for their diesel, but I don't think you can go wrong with Zerex products.

From the factory, it came with the regular green stuff and you had to add the SCA additive to prevent pitting and scaling. Last year when I replaced the water pump, I put in Ford Gold coolant that has the additives within the mix.

You may want to look at one of those GM truck sites to see what works well with the D-max.

I just changed from dex-cool to this in our GM Van and planning on doing the truck as well:

I have now found this product which seems to have the same type of makeup as the Dex-cool. Which should only cost about £50.00 ($78.00)http://www.bluecol.co.uk/clients/www.bluecol.co.uk/assets//Image/antifreeze/BCR001_hi.JPG

Some antifreezes do not do well together and will gel if mixed. Be sure to check this out before adding.

I am waiting for a reply from Bluecol to see if the Antifreeze is suitable for my truck, I really only want to use a for 2 years at a time that way I can flush and clean out the system more cheaply

The yellow Prestone extended life can be mixed with any coolant (I went to a shop to have the van's cooling system power flushed to remove all the old fluid, though), here is a thread from another forum:

I agree. Zerex should be a lot cheaper than HOAT from the dealer. I believe I paid 20 sum bucks for a gallon of Mopar HOAT a couple months ago. List price that is. Mopar only offers concentrate. I heard Zerex offers both premix and concentrate.

I have just done my Antifreeze change now it took most of the day to make sure I had a nice and clean engine and radiator. I use OAT antifreeze made by a company called Carplan. It was in stock at my local motor factors and only cost £57.00 ($89.00) for 15 litres which leaves me some for topping up if needed. I would also like to thank every one for there input, as I some times feel I am out on a limb, living so far away from where my TV and Cat are produced.

Your going to get as many answers as there are posts; but here is mine. Like jetskier, I wanted a coolant that I did not have to monitor and add the SCA. I flushed and switched to the red Chevron Delo extended life coolant (ELC). You can get it at the big truck dealers. There are several brands available. The stuff I used has an 8 year life and does not require any additive.

Here is a quote I resurected from a different web site (take it like you would any other free advice):

G-05 isn't the coolant I would recommend for your diesel's special coolant needs. It's a universal one-size-fits-all coolant that Ford uses in all its gasoline models (like the little Focus) out of convenience, uniformity, and cost. And for the record, it has never been officially approved by Ford for PSD's that originally came with "green" coolant. Also if you use the traditional "green" coolant, you'll need to add a cavitation preventative called SCA (supplemental coolant additive).
If you can find a heavy duty ELC diesel coolant you will get better cavitation and corrosion protection, better heat transfer, much longer maintenance-free life, and since HD ELC's are silicate-free unlike the G-05, your water pump will thank you too. Look for Delo ELC, Texaco ELC, CAT ELC, Fleetrite ELC (what International, who made your engine recommends), Rotella ELC, Mobil 1 ELC, Prestone Heavy Duty ELC, Zerex Extreme Heavy Duty, or any other heavy-duty ELC made for diesels.
