Pre heater

Post by Sean on 11/27/2010, 10:33 pm

I have a engine pre heater sitting in my workshop that was on one of my Land Rovers, has any one fitted one to there T.V.
This one is a 2.7kw at 230 volts AC, and can heat the water system to 85%C. in approximately 1 hour.

Sean,

My CTD came standard with one installed. I keep Baby plugged in on cold winter nights to insure a smooth start in the morning. I also use a winter fuel additive with an anti-gelling compound in it to prevent non-starting due to fuel gelling.

Mine was a factory option too. My truck lives in the garage, but I occasionally use it so the heater works when I get start it up. This is only the case if it is in the single digits or below 0°F. I have a timer that comes on about 2-3 hours before I leave for work.
I found if I turn on my exhaust brake tune, the engine warms in about 3-4 miles of driving.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention. For the first time since I bought the truck (new in 2000), I put in Rotella 5W-40 synthetic rather than running 15W-40 for the winter. It was around $19/gallon at Walmart. I'm hoping it helps with the cold starts. Last week, the daytime high was 22°F. It started fine with 15W-40, but it ran like it was lubricated with molasses for a few miles.

Doesn't get cold enough where I am to justify the preheater. My first winter with a diesel, so I'll probably be adding fuel conditioner in a week or so.

Mine came from the factory with the heater. I thought all '06 and up Duramaxes did. scratch Guess not.

My manual says its needed only when temps get below 0 F.

I've used it a few times but not often. One nice thing is the heater is nice and hot as soon as you start it up. No driving for miles with frozen hands waiting on the engine to warm. Wink

Truth be told my truck is very rarely driven in winter. I actually changed oil in it today. It was the first time it had been started since our last camping trip the last week of October.

My 2004 Ford came with a preheater. I have a remote control Electric switch that I use when it gets cold. That way I can preheat the truck 1 hour before I start it with out getting out in the cold to plug it in.

Where is your mains plug located Question Mountainman.
Diesel fuel has an additive added at source over here from about October onwards.

The plug end hangs down just under the passenger side inner fender. (Between the inner fender liner and engine block.) It has a rubber cap that seals the plug from moisture/dirt.

I have no idea where the other end of the cord is attached to the actual heater. I've never paid any attention to it. Laughing I can take a look and let you know if your interested.

Just out of curiosity Sean - What is the voltage of a general use receptacle in your home? What is the voltage of an electric cooking stove or large Air conditioner?

Any chance of a picture of location of pre heater plug.
All our electric services are 230 volts we have 100 amp RCB or RCBO's on our distribution boards to protect against electric shocks. Most house's over here don't have air-con just lots of heating, I have a wet heating system with a 27 KW Combi boiler.

That is the exact plug on mine. Notice the cap over the end of the plug.

The two small tie straps are cut on mine and the plug now hangs just below the inner fender liner. (Passenger side.)

I'd add an extension cord to that! Bad place to have a power cord. Dodges are out front behind the grill.

Sean,
You should be able to tack down a 240v heater to replace the 120v one. HZ doesn't matter on resistive heating elements.

I found the cable to my onboard Heater when I was changing my Antifreeze. The cable was cable tied just under the header tank. If I can find the space I will try and fit my kenlow heater as this also designed to pump and heat the water system.
