Furnace Blower/Fan and Propane issue

Post by dragynj on 11/5/2010, 7:12 am

Getting ready for a trip to Pullman, WA this weekend to do a little tailgating. When I went out to the 'Cat to make sure everything was running (did it this AM and leaving this afternoon, nothing like waiting until the last minute) I noticed the furnace isn't blowing the way it used to. Heat is coming out of the registers, but not at the rate I remember, but my memory could be shot. Not sure I'll get to trouble shoot this fall/winter, but when I do I'm looking for any pointers. I did a quick look under the fridge and there is no obvious sign of blockage. Could it be that the furnace is just undersized? Maybe there is a hole in the duct work under the cat?

Also, to piggy back this. My driver side propane tank has always given me fits. It worked great about a month ago, but can't get it to consistenly light today. Could this just be a bad regulator?

Lots of vague questions, thanks in advance for any input or conversation!!!!!!

I would assume that the bottle has enough gas left in the bottle to fire up your appliances. Some time lack of gas can be a cause of low pressure, and problems. With regard to the furnace not giving much air movement might be due to a battery problem or just low on power.

I experienced both of these problems with my Wildcat. From day one I would have problems off and on drawing propane from the the driver's side propane bottle. Sometimes it would work perfectly, sometimes it wouldn't draw at all. It finally quit drawing this past spring and it turned out that the changeover regualtor on the passenger side was the culprit. After it was replace I haven't had a problem since. Try moving the tank selector switch back and forth a couple of times and see if the problem clears up.

Your furnace problem is exactly what I experiened last year. It turned out that a cover on one of the vents on the furnace itself had come loose and fell off. It just a twist on cover and easy to reinstall. Hopefully this is the reason you are experiencing less air flow.

Below is a picture of my furnace. On the right side, by the propane line, you can see two circles, these are the vent covers. The cover to the rear of the funace had come off and most of the hot air was blowing into the compartment rather than the trailer.

This RV furnace is designed to work with a variety of different floor plans which is why it has so many places to attach ductwork.

Thanks guys!

Sean, just filled the propane tank, but good suggestion. Did think that was the issue prior to the fill a couple weeks back, but now I'm not sure.

Richard, I took the louvered grill off the front of the furnace to see what I could see. Great picture! I inspected the duct holes on the front of the furnace, but not the side. I'll have to take a look at those once I return (or tonight once camp is set up). Not sure that is the issue though since I should feel some air coming out from under the fridge grill. Didn't feel much there while inspecting, but worth a closer look!!

Thanks again!

OH, by the way Richard. Nice MOD! Is that furnace grill homeade, or did you buy that? Just added another to do to my list!

Concerning the driver side propane tank, it could be the regulator on the tank valve. Try opening it VERY slow. If you open too fast, it will only allow a small amount of pressure to escape. Supposed to be an improvement for safety, but it can be frustrating if it is the cause of your problems.

dragynj,

I don't think you should feel any air coming from the vent under the reefer. I believe that is the return air for the furnace. I think air should be flowing in not out. If it's flowing out it might indicate a loose or missing duct cover on the furnace.

dragnj, the furnace grill cover was standard from the factory.
