Fifth wheel stand

Post by RichGeorge on 10/22/2010, 4:55 pm

Had some scrap wood so made a stand to put the fifth wheel on when its not in the truck. The height of the stand matches the height of the truck bed, so the amount of lifting is greatly reduced when removing the fifth wheel. Just disconnect it from the rails and walk it onto the stand.

Just curious, do have any idea as to how much that slider hitch weighs?

Great stand. Scruffy slides the slider onto a couple sawhorses with a board on top. The sawhorses are the right height for the truck bed. I think your stand would be more stable.

I see you have casters on the stand. Why don't you just leave the hitch hooked up to the camper. Pull the pins on the rails of the truck then use the camper to lift the hitch out of the truck. Pull the truck forward, bring in the stand and set the hitch down. No lifting whatsoever!

I like the stand! Good idea, might build one soon!!

Sweet idea. I have a cart made up to store my 5.2KW Generac on. I carry it in the bed when needed and I can slide it off the tailgate onto the cart. Than wheel the cart with genset out of the way.

I have a stand made up much like Rich's and the same hitch. To get the Husky out of the truck, I back the truck half-way into the garage and hook up winch to an eye that is screwed into the overhead. I pull the pins on the winch, lift the hitch up, pull the truck out and lower the winch onto the stand. I then roll it over to the storage space reserved for it in the garage.

Not sure how much the hitch weighs, but it is heavy. Far too heavy for me to try and lift it by myself.

Just curious....

How many leave the fifth wheel in the bed when not pulling? I've always just left mine pinned in and remove it if I need the space for a load.

Leave my 15K Pullrite in the bed unless I need the room for something else. My son helps me remove and replace it.

Re: Fifth wheel stand

Richard, I don't know how much the fifth wheel weighs, but its enough. I lifted it from the truck bed to the ground & back once and that was enough of that.

drgynj, our WC is stored outside on gravel, a ways from the shop, otherwise I'd be doing as you suggest. I guess I either need a larger shop, a winch on the ceiling of the current shop, or a lift truck.

I pull my fifth wheel when winterizing and put it back in just before the first trip in spring. During summer I still pull it when not planning to camp in the upcoming weeks. We use our truck fairly often for hauling other stuff.

I have a hoist in the shop, takes less than 5min to take out, put on 4 wheel dolly and roll under the workbench, same putting it back in. Figure the 200+ lbs takes extra fuel to haul around.

Do the same if I remember to pull the pin before I lift the trailer.

I rigged an eye-hook and a come-along to lift mine out in the carport. Use the same rig to put my hard toneau cover on with some straps. There is no end to what you can do with a little thought. cheers

I'm with BobnPi, leave it in until necessary then let the sons lug it. It's called pay-back time! Laughing

I leave my hitch in all the time -- only remove it when I must have the extra room for hauling. Wish I had a couple of sons a little closer to home so I could cash in on the pay back time.

I have the samehitch as Rich but really have no place for a hoist/lift. By pulling the center pivot pin out I can break the hitch into two parts and then it is manageable. Also gives me a chance to put some white grease on the pivot pin.

My hitch comes out in two parts or I wouldn't be able to man handle it by myself. It's still a work out though! I don't like it in my bed during the winter getting weathered and road salt on it. If it was light, I'd remove it after every trip.

I leave mine in until I need the truck bed for something else which usually ends up being the very next week after a camping trip. I have a Hijacker which is two pieces. The base weighs about 70 lb. and the head weights about 60 lb. Not too bad to put in and out.

I have a pullrite slider-weight is 250#.I take it apart in 3sections. I lift the heaviest part with a 2500# winch in the garage.usually takes 20-30 minutes to assemble/diassemble.when I take it off the truck(after every trip) it goes into the kids old little red wagon.we camp every other weekend when possible. In the winter I cover it with a grill cover and take it to the shed.
