Camping 101/Fall Foliage

Post by MountainMan on 10/19/2010, 1:08 pm

Fall is the most beautiful time of year in WV and it doesn't get any better than middle October for vivid colors.

We arrived to our favorite Forest Campground on Saturday to find it completely booked. Evidently everyone else thinks October is also the most beautiful time of year. Wink

We found a private campground close by and decided to give it a try. Beautiful views of Seneca Rocks out our side windows and a trout stream within 6 feet of rear bumber

From inside the Cat

Trout stream directly behind Cat

Trail to top of rocks from pic above. 1.8 miles to the top. Every step uphill!

A view from the top of the rocks. Camera was zoomed all it had. 1500' straight drop to the bottom. Notice the campground in center of pic. The Cat is the 4th camper back on the right near the river.

I have a bunch of beautiful Fall foliage pics I'll post in a seperate thread but here is a couple teasers... Laughing

Anyone else see the UFO in this pic? I honestly don't know what it was. scratch

A 5 mile hike through this to a vista you have to see to believe!

More to come soon!

After hiking the trail above we come to this. About 3 feet behind my wife is a long, long drop.

Road to Spruce Knob in the Monongahela National Forest. Talk about vivid colors!

My father and wife surrounded by color.

Blackwater Canyon.

Earl,

All pics are from the Monogahela National Forest in WV. Its well over 900,000 acres and spreads over 10 counties in the state. Nearly all of the counties are considered highlands in the state.

The Monogahela is the best kept secret in the east! I prefer it ten times over the Smokey Mountains. You may be the only person in PA not to have visited the Mon... Every other license plate is from PA, MA or New York. Laughing

Thanks for the info! Never camped in WV. I want to explore my state fully before I start traveling to other states. I've drove through WV many times and go to tractor pulls now and than in WV. I've been around the Monogahela river in PA if that helps. lol

The pix and colors are beautiful. WV must have gotten more rain this summer than NH. The fall colors here were a little disappointing compared to previous years. We had a very dry summer here.

Thanks to all. Glad you guys enjoyed the pics. We sure enjoyed taking them! Laughing

shrowang - WV was well above average temps all summer but luckily we did get close to average rainfall. October has been dry as dust though.

TC - There is gold in those streams. Golden Trout stocked by the WV DNR!
