Tubular heater in furnace vent

Post by Sean on 10/19/2010, 7:12 am

Has any one installed a tubular heater in the vent for the Furnace Question In my cat it is under the pantry. My thinking on this is air is drawn out of the lounge area into the furnace to be heated and blown back into the Cat through the floor vents. If I have a low wattage heater in the path of the air flow it must increase the efficiency of the furnace. I have a couple of tubular heaters that consume 60 watts per foot, so cheap to run especially if I am paying for shore power plus the heaters are at this moment in time doing nothing. Another plus is the excess heat is in the basement area, Where I have already blocked off the air vent from the Furnace.

I've never seen or even heard of a tubular heater but it sure sounds like an easy way to add electric heat.

For those people that have not come across a tubular heater here is a pair of 12'' ones that have a power rating of 60 watts @ 230 volts

A tubular heater is basically a heating element in a tube. that consumes 60 watts of electric per 12''. (60 watt light bulb with out the light). The metal casing gets hot and radiates the heat out, no thermostat they just get hot to the point that you could burn your hand if you touch it (just like a light bulb), but a lot more efficient. You can buy them in lengths up to 8' and also double them up so that 2 x 8 x 60= 960 watts of heat. They last for years, we have one that my wife had in her bedroom when she was a child, so that makes it 45+ years old.

It would be against the law to develope and build something like that here in the states. I believe they have a law that you can't build anything that last more than a year.

Sean.........

Are you running those on 220vac or 110vac? Judging by the plugs, looks as though you are running 220vac, and that would make them hotter?
