camper cover

Post by btaylor0 on 10/17/2010, 1:35 am

I have read pros and cons about covering a camper for the winter and most of the cons seem to be in regard to moisture collecting under the cover and causing problems. it seems to me the area that needs the most protection is the roof. Has anyone tried using a cover just big enough to cover the roof and maybe about 2 feet down the sides and hold it down with bungy cords attached to the bottom of the camper frame rail?

I covered a trailer once many years ago. Used a tarp and ropes. In the spring I found that the wind had moved the ropes around enough to rub the paint off the aluminum. So, if you are going to cover it, get a good quality cover from someone like this California Car Cover. I had a van cover from them it was very nice.

One of these days, when time and money permits, I am going to put up a car port to keep the sun off the roof.

I covered mine once...Used a big tarp, did not breath enough and got very hot under it.Now I have bubbles on my roof.If you plan on covering it use something breathable and white or tan color.Like Scott said,It will not take much movement to wear a spot on your camper from your tie downs.

We use the ADCO cover, and have for 4 years now with no problems. I have not noticed any problems with the roof at all, and we always use at least 6 Damp-Rid water traps inside the camper to contain the moisture inside.

Re: camper cover

I have done that for the last 28 years with 2 different units. I purchased tarps that went down minimally on all 4 sides and used a galvanized pipe framework zap-strapped to the frame (extending out about 10" all around to keep bungees from touching sides). I have never had a roof leak issue and it kept the rubber membrane in good condition BUT it did leave rub marks especially on the front cap because there is no way you can either tarp over this area or route bungees without touching. So this year for the 1st time I bought an ADCO cover and put it over my new WC.

Bottom line? Way better than nothing but not perfect. Give me another 28 years and I will review the ADCO.... :)

I agree with the shelter option. Cost is pretty steep up front depending on how you go about it but after the money is spent you are done. I had Wilson Construction come down and put a pole barn style shelter. 6x6 treated posts every 8' with a trussed roof. Corrugated sheet metal roof and comes down 6 feet down the side. 18x40 with 14' ceiling height. I also poured a concrete slab to lock in everything. Next phase is electrical. I have about $10,800 in it but it will outlast the Cat.

I use an ADCO but it doesn't stop all the rain from getting through to the roof. So, I first cover the entire roof with a tarp that goes about two feet down each side before installing the ADCO. I find that my DRZ airs dont fill up nearly as fast with this combo.
