Wildcat 31THSB 2010

Post by Ant&Debs on 10/14/2010, 11:11 am

Hi

We are from the United Kingdom and have a 2010 Wildcat 31THSB We left the UK in september and drove 50 plus miles to a Ferry port to catch a 24 hour ferry to northern spain we then drove from the north of spain to Central Portugal then Central Portugal to Cadiz in Southern Spain. 500 yards from a campsite one of the rear axle bearings distroyed itself and the wheel half came off. Lucky i was able to jack up the axle and remove the wheel. and limp the 500 yards onto site. Not a good day the total mileage the wildcat has covered was less than 2000 miles!

Ouch!

I would also check the rest of your bearings and repack with grease.
Are you coming back to the U.K. or leaving your unit on a site.?
Did you have to pay any tolls on the motorways.?
What part of London you in? I live in Laindon Essex

Hi Sean

We come from Hastings, on south coast.
Not coming back for a year or so, spending 3 months in spain then off to morrocco then back up to central portugal.
We took Ferry to northern spain only tolls we paid were appx 80 euros. Site we are on is near to cadiz appx 1 hour from gibraltar. 250 euros a month inc electric/sat tv/wifi

I maybe a bit thick here, our unit has sealed bearing system which i thought was maintenance free? I take it i am wrong! if so where do you get your spare bearings from?

Cheers

Ant

I wish I was there with you, even for just a month (I hope retirement comes soon, 10 years). I come from Brighton originally, just along the coast from you. I would get my bearing from Essex bearings, if you check the numbers on your bearing it should tell you size etc. If you have a problem getting them, let me know and I'll try to get contact number for you. Also try this link it might have the info you need.http://www.wildcatcamperforum.com/maintenance-repairs-trouble-shooting-service-warranty-f12/wheel-bearings-and-seals-part-numbers-t293.htm
Did you ship your Cat in your self or purchase over here ?. Have a good time and try not to drink too much or get sunburn.

Hi Sean

We purchased through crosscountryrv in suffolk who did the shipping/conversion etc. They purchase from RVwholesalers.

We are now waiting for ccrv to ship a complete new axle to us. Know the feeling i've got 16 years till i retire, but couldn't wait that long lol!

welcome to the forum.

Will you have to install the axel or will ccrv pay to have installed?

We are on a campsite in spain so the axle is being sent out from the UK. There is a british truck mechanic on site, so hopefully both he and I should be ok. Its not been a good start to our tour. The surge tank on the GMC blew in portugal, so we had 2 weeks at a camp site in central portugal waiting for parts, then for this to happen, we were lucky as we were only few hundred yards from the site and we had planned to stay here for 3 months. as we are close to gibralter. and in January we hope to go over to morrocco,

Is the axle coming with new brake drums, because there might be some damage to the one that the bearing disintegrated. I have just put a mechanical hand brake on my unit, and found it was possible to prise the sealed cable connector apart and reuse. Is your Cat fitted with a hand brake Question Was it this axe that failed?, if so I would be interested in seeing a picture of the damage. Well in fact I would be interested in a picture anyway.

Ant&Debs,
Even with sealed bearing axles, you'll still want to check the bearings. Raise wheel off the ground, turn the wheel each way and feel/listen for any roughness or noise but don't mistake brake and magnet drag/noise as a bad bearing. Also try pulling on the top and bottom and side to side to check for play. I haven't messed with sealed bearings on trailers, but they shouldn't have any play if they're like other sealed wheel bearings. I'd throughly check out the other axle as well.

Another tip, everytime you stop, feel the bearing area of the drum/rim/center cap for heat. A bearing going out will get hot and hotter as it gets worse.
