wildcat 29rlbs

Post by rvmama on Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:38 pm

OK, here's another 1st time RV'er question. I'm actually paying someone to winterize our Cat, but my question is, am I supposed to shut off the propane tank I've used all summer? We only used it to heat water a few times and to cook on the stove twice all season.

If I am supposed to shut it off, is it difficult to do?

Again, thanks to everyone for answering all my previous "newbie" questions!

You should shut it off after every outting and for the winter. Never travel with it on. Just open the compartment door where the propane tank is stored and turn the valve on top of the tank to the off position. Which should be turning the valve the same way as the clock turns to close it.

I always leave mine on when the refrigerator has food in it, weather its in the driveway or going down the road. The only time you MUST turn it off is when you go through a tunnel.
And yes, to turn it off, open the door where the tank is, and turn the knob that's on top of the tank, just like a gas grill.

For what it's worth I also travel with the propane on to keep the fridge going. When we drive we usually drive all day and into plus 100 degree temps so it is necessary. Everyone I know with an RV also does the same (even the RV salesmen suggest it).

But end of trip...I shut it off.

I also leave my gas on but check regularly for cracks and loose fittings.

Two points I would like to address if I may. I also turn my propane off before I leave the site for home. Reason leaks. I had one recently. A very small one and if I did not practice the turn off religiously I would have been out of propane when I arrived at the next site on our next trip. Not to mention the money spent on wasting the propane. Why do you need the refer. Have a 2006 and never needed it on the road. Even in 100 degree plus weather it has never gotten hot enough to pose a danger to our food. Traveled over 8 hours one time and the refer never got over 40 degrees. Of course we may kind of cheat. We take a half gallon milk jug, fill it with water and freeze it in our garage freezer. We turn the Cat's refer on at least 4 days before take off. When we leave home we put the jug in the refer and turn the refer off. When we arrive at our destination it goes into the freezer for the duration of our stay. Always had room for it. When we leave we repeat the process and when we get home it goes into the freezer in the garage for next trip.
