Hunter Digital Thermostat...Is this normal???

Post by ENGR55 on Wed Oct 06, 2010 9:03 am

Hey gang,

I just finished replacing my dometic thermostat with a Hunter digital. I think I did it right...but, I am not sure why the heater range is so large. What i mean is, the heater kicks off when it reached the set temp within three degrees, but will not kick on within ten degrees. I set the temp for 85 to test. It was reading 74 and did not turn on. If I flip the switch off and back to auto it kicks on. I am missing something? I have attached photos of my wiring. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate your help. Thanks

This is the OEM dometci I removed, sorry for the blurry image.

This is the one I installed with the wiring shown.

Close up.

The two black wires go to the fan hi low switch.

completed project

on picture 2 and 4 there is a label saying about the jumper cable, is the jumper cable meant to be there? I can not read the whole label, so I am unsure what it states.

Sean, I read that as well. I believe it is referring to if you use the system for a different purpose. Everything I read online about what others have done was to leave this in place. There are numerous posts online regarding this, so it can get a little confusing. I hope that is correct by leaving it in place. I did remove and cover the red 7.5 wire as suggested by all the info I read.

Well I do hope that the solution is forth coming as I would also like to do this mod, because the dometic controller leaves little to be desired.

ScottandGrace,
On occasion I take the stupid train to stupid town...lol, but yes I did check both heat and cool. The pic was just shot after I tested the cool side. So far it works well in both, but I am not crazy about the ten degree range on heat. I am going to check my connections one more time, then consider replacing with a new one.

Sean, it is so much better than the dometic even with the heat range issue, make the switch you will be a happy camper.

Hey, I've been there ~ I think they may have given me the key to the city. But I digress (I always wanted to say that)..
The 10 degree swing is strange, mine keeps it to within 1 degree below and 1~2 degrees over the set heat temp. The AC stays within 1 degree. There is an adjustment for the swing (1,2 or 3 degrees) - check your directions (cuz I sure cant remember how I did it..).

I do believe you can set the range. like scott says above,,,, BUT, there is also a HOLD button. You gotta make sure that its set to HOLD the temp you set it at. I think its having the wild degree swing because you haven't set the HOLD temp button.

And yes when all else fails, read the instructions or in my case many times reread the instructions. scratch study

Thanks guys, I am re-reading and scratching the head... Idea for the range. I will update if I figure out the issue. I am sure it has something to do with "operator error" scratch

After you set the range , there should be a HOLD button that you push to save that setting.

I think, there are wires which are placed in wrong connections. Thanks for the post, I am also fixing my own thermostat, and I am afraid, I will encounter the same problem. I am actually following-up each comment.

Exactly where is the hold button. I have installed the Hunter Thermostat but I am not able to find a hold button. Either mine doesn't have one or I am blind Cool I do not see it referenced to in the thermostat instructions. I have the one pictured above.
