Reading Light Mod

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 10/5/2010, 9:30 am

A while back Scruffy removed one of the reading lights in the bedroom, and put a 12v fan in its place. This summer he started putting the light in the living room over one of the chairs. Before he could finish, he broke his foot, and put the project on hold. Well, the foot is healed, and he got back to the reading light. Here is a photo of the finished project.

Great idea. I'm putting this on my list of mods.

Let me know when Scruffy has a couple weeks free. I'm bringing my cat to him to get all his mods. I'll pay him in GUM!

That's a great mod, but what I really like is swapping out one of the lights for a fan. If I were handy with tools I would try to do this.

Nice job. I wish we could move the two lights from over our bed to the main slide under the cabinet over the couch. I don't ever read in bed, but I do read on the couch. The main light causes a glare on the page.

Maybe I can get the hubby on this....I doubt it though.

Nice mod.

The 12 v fan came from Camping World. It's the kind truck drivers put in their trucks to help circulate the air.

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/metal-blade-12-volt-fan/26211

If you click the link in our signature, you can see how it looks installed. Installation for this was easy. The wiring was already there. He took down the light, cut the cord on the fan, leaving enough to connect it to the existing wiring, and attached the fan to the ceiling. It was necessary to drill new holes for the screws when he attached it, because the holes for the fan didn't line up with the holes that were there.

Installing the light in the living room wasn't quite as easy. It required drilling a hole into a space that had wiring running through it, snaking the wire from the drilled hole to the existing light, and having a basic knowledge of how to do electrical wiring.

Tater, Scruffy is obviously the worker whilst you must be his organizer lol! . This is what people call team work, well done to both of you.

I come up with ideas and sometimes sketches. Scruffy makes them all work..... no matter what I dream of.

Oh the "Dream Team" huh...sounds like a good match. =) I like the idea of the lighty, after i switch to LEDS I will do this too. The 12v lights get too hot and I have heard the LEDS save a ton on power usage. The fan is a great idea.

LED's use a fraction of the current that incandescent bulbs use. A sidemarker on a utility trailer may use around 1 amp. If you replace that marker with the equivalent LED marker, you could drop current consumption to about .25 amps. A lot of our customers that are blowing tow light fuses on their trucks switch out all their incandescent trailer lights to LEDs because they draw so much less. They also put off almost no heat.

I now have 18 LED lights in the lounge kitchen area of our cat the current draw having them all on is just over 2 amps. So we can have all the lights on and still save on battery usage.
