Cost of Fuel

Post by Sean on 10/1/2010, 1:36 am

Over here in the U.K. we have just been hit with another rise in fuel tax, AwwMan it now stands at 58.19 pence per litre ($0.91)
or £2.24 per U.S. gallon ($3.54). I might have to stay at home more. Because 5.000 miles per year at an average of about 13 mpg U.S.= £861.54 ($1364.50), Just on the tax now, add the cost of the fuel and retailer cost it adds up to a £4.54 per U.S.gallon ($7.19)x 5000 miles =£2271.50 ($3597.56).
But looking on the sunny side I have a full tank of Diesel for this weekends trip, so the extra tax will not hit me until Sunday evening. But I am staying behind a Public House this weekend I will have to cry into my Shooters

lol!

Not sure on income tax in the UK (if any) but could you deduct the tax paid from your income come tax time?

Have a good weekend!

I have to pay 22% tax on all income over £5000.00 ($7900.00) +11% national insurance then to top it all 17.5%Vat so you could say we are taxed to the hilt. And if you have over a preset amount of money when you die you get taxed at 40% on every thing over the preset amount. More BEER so I can cry into it.

Jim,

When I passed the local Hess station in Derry yesterday afternoon the price was $2.749. When I pulled in to fuel up after church this morning it was $2.819. $.07 per/gallon rise in less than 12 hours ..... go figure!

Still, this station is the cheapest around right now. Probably because it's located in the middle of town and nowhere near I-93.

It has been in the $2.70's range down here for the last couple of months. It seems to stay at a price point between regular and medium grade gasoline.

It's going to keep getting worse as the temps get colder. Diesel prices are tied into heating oil prices.

Re: Cost of Fuel

Post by schrowang on 10/8/2010, 6:00 pm

Not long ago I did a little research on exactly what a 48 gallon barrel of light sweet crude produces. If I remember correctly only 8 gallons of that barrel is refined down to #2 fuel oil. When I think of all the competition for that 8 gallons (commercial diesel trucks, ships, diesel locomotives, JET-A and finally us private owners) I don't wonder anymore that the price is so high. I'm just glad it's not higher. The high demand and low supplies keep the price high.

I just wish they'd change the ratio a little and brew more #2 and less gasoline.

Just wishful thinking I guess.

Frank,

On our way north on I-81 we always stop at the FJ just north of Winchester. I guess Virginia has to have one of the lowest fuel taxes in the nation. NC was always about $.07 higher than VA and WV, MA, PA, NY, CT and MA are out of sight. The only comparable price I could find along the way was NJ which was just $.02 higher than VA.

Go figger ..... gasman
