Secondary glazing the windows.

Secondary glazing the windows.
It must be what I was put on this earth for, more diy on the Cat. After the weekend we decided to look at the possibilities of secondary glazing, has anybody attempted doing this?. I only want to do the windows that are fixed, of which there are 4 and also the windows that are above and to the side of the louvre openings. I was thinking of using 2mm thick clear Acrylic sheet, and fitted to the frame with removable 1/4 turn fittings of some sort. Any ideas on this would be very welcome. Its something I need to do if we are going to use the Cat over the winter.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
I was thinking you could use LEXAN and some stick on weatherstripping on the edge of the lexan. Attaching it could be another story. You'd want to be able to remove it easily.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
I have never heard of LEXAN, (another product for me to look up)
For fixing I was thinking of a product called Easyfix. that is basically a flexible PVC that is in channel form. Not sure how good it would be though.
(what have you done with your Cat, is it still going to be a Cat).
We all want to know.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
Sean: I dont know if this is what your are asking or not but i bought a sheet of plex-glass and cut it to fit the small lip on the inside of my windows. then i bought the small mirror clips, removed the screws around the window and put the clips there to hold the glass in. when we were in colorado the first year i noticed how cold my arm would get setting beside the window. it is a cheap way to double pane those windows. i tried cutting the plex-glass and that didnt work because it would get hot and melt back together. i scored it with a knife and then tapped it and it snapped into. i took a grinder to round off the corners.

pioneerman when you put the plexiglass on to the window frame did you put any thing in between to stop cold transfer from frame to plexiglass?. This seems like a plan.

I've cut the lexan with a band saw and it has never melted back together. I have seen plexiglass melt together too. I do like the idea of the mirror clips, that would probably work good.

i didnt put anything between the plexiglass and the frame at the time. i wasnt sure how good it would work. it seems to help tho and i should put some weather stripping between them and it would probably seal it up better

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
I have gone with a plexiglass product of 2mm thick (thin must think of the weight issues). and I am using a product called dry glaze as a seal between the plexi and window frame. All I am waiting for now is my mirror clips that I had to purchase from the USA, we don't sell them over with out the full kit
I will post a picture well I have done a window or two.

I will try to take some pictures in the next few days, and also show the parts that I am using.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
I have just installed another window the one above my main slide[img]

This picture shows the parts used

This picture shows what it looks like fitted on the window surround.
(sorry for picture being a bit on the dark side). But you can see the mirror clips, I used ten on this window and it is holding the plexiglass firmly to the window frame.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
I used some mirror clips from Ebay (from USA), and the original screws still had enough length to get a good grip on the outer frame work.

Thanks for the pics Sean, now I can totally understand the process better. I am in the process of doing this as well. The pictures really helped me a lot.

Re: Secondary glazing the windows.
The secondary glazing worked a treat, condensation was down by about 85% on the windows that where treated to the modification, so I am quite pleased. I have enough Plexiglas left to do another couple of the little fixed windows, which I will do when time permits.
