Re: trailer light plug
Mine is installed on the left hand side as you open the tail gate, about 6'' in and 12'' up from the floor of the bed.

Mine is same location, but only 4 inches up from the bed to the center of the plug. If I can find my camera to usb line, I'll post a pic. Had new floors put in the house and furniture is everywhere, so finding it may take a while.

Re: trailer light plug
I put mine in the post on the left hand side (not sure on how high up). Made it pretty easy to install as I could remove the tail light and get back there to help feed wires. Also, very easy to reach from the back of the truck.

Re: trailer light plug
You don't say what kind of truck you have, but when I was at the RV service center, they sell a Y cable for the extra plug. This Y cable connects onto the wire harness between the original 7 pin connector. Then you have about 3 feet of cable with another 7 pin connector to be mounted inside the bed.
Another words, you dont have to splice into the actual wires, its all just plugs together.

Here's a couple of install videos of something like the kit oldelmer1 was talking about. They're pretty easy to install, and as long as your truck came with a factory 7-way, you can probably find a kit to fit.

Re: trailer light plug
We ordered the truck with the factory towing package, ordered it specifically with a minimum of what I though I'd need for a 5th wheel actually. The truck has one purpose, to pull the 5th wheel so there was no need for 4X4, etc. When I bought the WC I had them install the hitch and connector in the bed. The connector is about a foot in and a foot up from the left hand corner when the tailgate is opened. I've seen them mounted up almost in the wheel well, but being "vertically challenged" I knew that wouldn't fly. As it is I stand on a milk crate to manipulate the handle on the hitch/connect the breakaway cable.

Re: trailer light plug
When I had the hitch transferred to the 04.5 Ram 2500 I had the harness outlet installed on the driver's side in pretty much the same location as the rest of you.
Only problem is (when you're fulltiming or mosttiming) that this prevents using the portion of the bed between the hitch and tailgate for storage.
Since I have two action packers back there I now use the OEM outlet in the bumper that Dodge installed. Works like a charm.

Re: trailer light plug
Mike,
I use milk crates, lots of milk crates. I have one in the basement full of "stuff", plastic. I have 3 in the bed of the truck, 2 plastic and 1 metal. I also have 2, metal, that are about 50% larger, think rectangular or 6 gallon jugs instead of 4, that live in the bed also. They end up with wood for blocking when towing and as storage for groceries, etcetera, when not towing. Some are used as tables, sometimes a step ladder...and yes a couple live between the hitch and the tailgate while towing. Don't tow much anymore, probably a total of 340 miles a year, just to and from the summer parking spot, but we "live" in a 5th wheel about 6-7 months out of the year. Down in Arizona in one for 5 months and down at the summer place for another couple, a few days to a week at a time spread over the summer in our WC.

Re: trailer light plug
I considered putting one in the bed, but decided to use the bumper mounted one for awhile and see how it works. That was three years ago and I have not thought about it since. The bumper mounted jack works fine. I have a 5th wheel tail gate so the cord is routed over the low part.

Re: trailer light plug
Not to repeat after Mike...but, that is where mine is, and I am not a happy camper about it. If you have a truck that sits a little higher like my F-350 it is a pain. I am always climbing over the siderail to plug it in firmly. It's the little things that drive ya crazy, just my 2 cents.
