Wheel/Axle Alignment

Post by bighornram on 9/19/2010, 10:03 am

I've just returned from a trip and noticed uneven wear on the tires on my rear axle. (Pictures are attached). I think the images are a little difficult to tell but the left tire is worn on the right side (inside) and the right tire is worn on the right side (outside). What would cause this type of wear and any recommendations who you would take it to? I'll have to replace the tires for sure but don't want to do it until I repair the issue causing the uneven wear! I have another trip planned in 2 weeks!! affraid

I am only guessing but I would say the axle is slightly out of line.
If you measure from a point on your cat, lets say front locker panel to one axle each side to see if the distance is the same then do the same to the other axle, This at least will tell you if there is a slight misalignment with the axle.

I had a problem with tire wear on my 29RLBS WC until I had a axle Realignment done in Colorado Springs, CO. Do a search on this site for 'axle alignment' for more info. Hope this helps. Jim

I've measured from the front of the front rim to the front of the rear rim and I get the same distance on both sides of the trailer. I appear to have equal wear on my front axle. I broke a shackle last year and don't know how many miles I traveled before catching it. I replaced the shackles but would suspect the uneven wear could have occurred then.

EDIT: After sleeping on this I have another thought as to the source of this wear. I live in the loop of a cul-de-sac and every time I return home I have to make a very sharp left turn, then back up into my driveway. The only way to avoid making this extremely sharp turn would be to back the rig up the entire street. My first task on this will be a trip to Discount Tire where I purchased the tires. I'll have them the back tires to the front axle (if they are not too far worn). Hopefully I'll be able to get one more trip out of this set of tires. I believe I will upgrade to 16" rims when I replace them. sunny

Well, I just returned from a trip to Discount Tire where I had them move my tires from front to back axles. They didn't know about tire wear so I ended up at an RV repair shop. First question he asked me was if I make any very sharp turns. He saw no unusual wear and confirmed that my cul-de-sac turn every time I return home is the culprit. 2guns

That's good news, you'll be able to rest easy knowing that you have not got to look forward to a large repair bill.

I have a similar problem with mine, the inside of my left rear tire has alot of wear for only 4000 miles on it. I talked to Rod Batts at Wildcat and sent him photos of the worn tire and a photo of the axle No.#. Haven't heard back yet to see if its a bad axle or alignment, but I only have wear on one tire,, it seems that if the alignment was off I'd have wear on the tire on the opposite side too.

Mines doing that also. Just on one side. I know mines due for the shackle triangle thing and I kinda think thats whats causing mine to wear on that one tire.

I'd like to upgrade to the cushioned ones, but for $50 bucks I can go back stock with wet bolts. I think i'd rather spend more money on a nice pin box.

I had wear on inside of left rear RV tire only. 2/32 vs 5/32 in tread depth. Found the sleeves in the EquaFlex were worn. The top hangers were completely shot. All other sleeves were worn and loose. Rear axle was out of alignment. I talked to Equaflex and Lippert. They found nothing wrong with the parts. Interestingly, Tweetys and Equaflex did not think that wet bolts made any difference in sleeve wear.

New tire, new Equaflex and sleeves and axle alignment and a 1400 mile trip went ok.

Leave in the morning for 15-1600 mile travel. Will see how it does.

Any frame/spring shop should be able to work on it.
