East Coast / West Coast

Post by RonK on 9/14/2010, 8:26 am

Loving my new 2011 28RKBS and I am wondering about some of the designations you all use in describing yours. Whats the East Coast or West Coast difference? Bought mine in Colorado.

Since you bought yours in Colorado, it's most likely a West Coast model. Main differences are in tire size and axle weight capacity. West coast models have 16" tires and 6000 lb axles standard Vs East Coast models that come standard with 15" tires and 5200 lb. axles.

I beleive the West Coast models also offered something different in their slide outs by adding over head windows or sky lights that the East Coast models don't offer as standard. There may be more differences since 2006 when I bought mine, but those are the main ones I'm aware of.

I know the differences are close to nil now. As TC said, the west coast units were historically more upgraded than the east coast counterparts.

I have the East coast model that I upgraded to 16" wheels. I wonder if they upgraded the axles also. Is there a way to check?

There should be a tag on the axle which would tell you if it was a 5200 or 6000 lb. axle. Differences in the 2007 west coast model was more insulation, tinted windows, and two batteries, 16 inch wheels, 6000 lb axles and electrical outlet in the back. East coast model has laundry chute, different location for electrical hookup, and safe option in closet. This was in 2007, don't know about 2010.

Mine is an 2008 and has the 15" wheels, plug on the left rear, safe, and the laundry chute under the bathroom sink.So they didn't change any in 08 Maxtor. But I did get the tinted windows and two batteries.Never thought to check and see if that was extra.

I think its common knowledge that the East coast models are far superior to the West coast models.

Don't believe me? Just ask any of us Easterners. Laughing lol! Laughing

Well this debate could go on for ever.. I too had the same question so I called Rod Batts at Forest river and asked him. He said that 90% of all Wildcat Fifth wheels are made in Elkhart,Indiana. All the trailers as of july 2008 are the same with only minor minor differences such as in my 32QBT(East Coast). The west coast model doesn't have a garbage canand it says in the brochure(wierd they don't include a 10 dollar part). I upgraded my tires but was not able to upgrade the axles. If there are changes to any part of contruction the west coast is to change theirs as well.

Now other people have told me that they would order ones from the West as they are to be better builders. But who is to tell.
Hope this helps..
I do not think it matters where you get your unit from I still believe that there is to be issues anyway...

I agree, the late models are the same or close the same. Forest River doesn't publish separate east and west coast brochures anymore.

There were definite differences in the East and West coast 24RL. We have an East coast 24RL. I imagine your rear window is bigger, with the 2 long panels, one on each side. We have a wardrobe closet between the door and sofa which makes for a smaller window area. Our slide contains the dinette and a 2x3 foot TV cabinet, with storage underneath. Thus our slide out is sllightly larger. The wall where the West coast TV is located is all pantry on our model.

The East coast configuration is what convinced us to purchase the Wildcat, as it gave us more storage for longer duration travel, while giving us a shorter length unit.

To my knowledge, there currently is only one floorplan for the 24RL and it is what the West coast model was.

Definitely there are differences. My Oregon built 2010 32QBBS did not come with the exterior viewing TV window as advertised. The only thing the brochure states is that the garbage can was not available on west coast models so I was very suprised that mine didn't have the TV window. Also, the east models came standard with a skylight, which Steve a rep at the Oregon factory told me mine would also have. Mine showed up with no skylight. My maiden voyage was down the Oregon coast so Beverly had me stop by the factory and had a skylight put in for me. I also have a window in my bathroom, a feature east build models don't have. I have the faux rock but don't have it behind the stove like they do in the east. West coast models also don't have the docking station (I think thats what its called). I also don't have the shelves in the bedroom or a lightswitch.

My dealer sells both east and west built models. I ordered mine from Oregon because shipping was cheaper also not knowing that mine didn't come with some of the features.

My dealer did say that his preference was west built models as they've had more warranty repairs on their eastern counterparts. Same thing I heard form another dealership which sold both.

I wonder if the 10 gallon WH is in the west still in place of the garbage system. That is the reason I couldn't get it in 2006. The 6 gallon and garbage system seem to fit.

Yes that would make sense. My 2010 has a 10 gallon water heater and no central trash.
