Re: Skype
I set it up on my laptop and tested it by calling my friend next door. It's a free download and you use the person's email address to make a call. Calls made between computers are free. It's just one more way of keeping in touch and if you have a webcam, be careful what you are wearing or not.

Re: Skype
I've used it to keep in touch with other members of our ministry team both here in the U.S. and overseas. Talking to a pastor in London was like seeing and talking to him next door. There is a slight delay in the image response but the audio was excellent.

Re: Skype
I have used skype quite a bit due to the fact that I am in the Air Force. I just got back from Iraq in July and I used it everyday for 205 days. The great thing is you can use it to call any phone number in the U.S. for $2.95 a month, and that is for unlimited minutes. Now it is free if you call PC to PC but I used it primarily to call my wife on her cell phone. You can also set it up to show your own phone number when you call. I set mine up to show my cell phone number and when I did that it caused AT&T to think that I was actually calling from my cell phone and did not charge us minutes because it thought it was from another AT&T phone. If you have an Iphone or any kind of phone where you can have apps on it, there is a skype app and you can use it on your cell phone as long as you have a wifi conection. I can tell you it sure makes deploying a whole lot easier now days.

for the tip!!
Our son is deploying to Iraq in November, and we've been worrying about how to stay in touch.
Does anyone know if it works with Verizon?
TC
Certain Verizon smartphones even ship with Skype installed and I believe as a free service. My wife and I have it on our new Motorola Droid X. We have a friend moving to China in Februray and Skype will let us stay in touch without paying out the wazoo.

TC wrote:etrailer, is there a monthly charge to use the Skype on your Droid?
TC
Not that I'm aware of. I think it was one of Verizon's selling points that they provide Skype to Skype for free. I'll check at home tonight and post what I find here.

Re: Skype
et, thanks for checking on that for me. The data plan must cover several applications. I'll pitch this idea to our soldier and the DW to see if they'd be interested.
We'll also be checking with our Verizon provider to see if skype is something we can use on our regular phones, or if it's a "smart" phone app. only.

Re: Skype
I have used Skype for the last 2 years to talk with my son in the Air Force. He has been in Korea and is now in Germany and it has worked great. It is FREE and the best thing going to keep in touch with a loved one. We use our computers for Skype.
